April 22, 2023 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Behind a gem of an outing from Kiefer Lord, Washington (21-12, 8-8 Pac-12) dominated No. 9 Stanford (24-12, 12-5 Pac-12 Saturday afternoon in the Bay Area, shutting out the Cardinal 9-0 at Sunken Diamond.
After tip-toeing around trouble in the early going, Lord settled in and befuddled the Cardinal bats for the remainder of his eight innings. The righty fanned 10 batters, matching his career high, and retired the final 16 batters he faced.
The Huskies took advantage of some erraticism on the mound to take a third inning lead.
After loading the bases with one out, a wild pitch allowed Will Simpson to open scoring. A picture-perfect AJ Guerrero slide around a tag at home plate doubled the advantage, and another run on a wild pitch made it 3-0 in the third for the Dawgs.
After chasing Cardinal starter Matt Scott in the third, UW struggled to figure out reliever Nick Dugan. However, a Coby Morales walk in the seventh ended Dugan's day and following a Johnny Tincher HBP, Michael Snyder unloaded on a ball over the middle of the plate, sending a towering blast into the trees in left to double the Husky lead.
Washington tacked on three more in the final two innings as Tincher plated a pair with an RBI single in the eighth and Cam Clayton's RBI double made it 9-0.
After eight dazzling innings out of Lord, Sam Boyle sealed the deal in the ninth, getting Cort McDonald swinging to end the ballgame.
