Stanford Pulls Out Marathon Affair at Sunken Diamond
April 21, 2023 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – Washington and Stanford played deep into the night on Friday, with the ninth-ranked Cardinal pulling off a marathon walk off win in 16 innings, taking game one of the series at Sunken Diamond, 3-1.
Stu Flesland III worked around danger throughout his 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits but just one run. Grant Cunningham provided five scoreless innings of relief, while Reilly McAdams wore the loss with a pair of runs allowed.
After leaving a pair aboard in the first, a two-out single to center in the second plated the first run of the game as Eddie Park brought home Alberto Rios.
That lead lasted until the sixth, when Johnny Tincher sent a sharp double down the left line, bringing around Cam Clayton to deadlock the score at a run apiece.
A half inning after UW left runners at the corners in the ninth, Case Matter came on and left a pair in scoring position, sending the game into extras.
The Huskies looked primed to take the lead in the 13th, loading the bases with no outs. However, Washington failed to capitalize.
The Dawgs escaped danger themselves in the 14th, leaving runners at the corners as Coby Morales made a leaping grab near the wall in right-center. However, U Dub once again failed to cash in on a bases loaded opportunity in the 15th.
With game time surpassing four hours in total, Tommy Troy gave the Cardinal the walk off win with a two-run blast in the 16th, clearing the wall in left field.
