Sun Devils Even Series with Washington
April 15, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE β Washington fell behind just three batters into the game on Saturday and were never able to climb out of the hole, falling 8-6 to Arizona State to even the series at a game apiece.
Β
Jared Engman took the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings. Grant Cunningham's 2.1 scoreless highlighted five arms out of the bullpen for UW.
Β
The Sun Devils jumped all over the Huskies early, notching four first inning hits, three for extra bases, to go up 2-0.
Β
Cam Clayton responded for the Huskies, launching a leadoff homer to left in the home half.
Β
However, ASU scored four in the third, including a two-run home run, to re-extend the lead out to 6-1.
Β
The Huskies got three home in the sixth on an AJ Guerrero two-run shot to left and a fielding error at short that allowed Jeter Ybarra to come home. Will Simpson pummeled a ball to dead center but Isaiah Jackson robbed it at the wall, taking away a three-run nuke that would have given UW the lead.
Β
With momentum building on U Dub's side, the Sun Devils got two runs back in the eighth when a ball got trapped between the fences in left field, allowing Isaiah Jackson to come all the way around for an inside-the-park home run.
Β
Washington plated a pair in the ninth and put the tying run on second but a ground ball ended the ball game as ASU setup a Sunday rubber match.
Β
QUICK HITS
β’ AJ Guerrero's sixth-inning home run extended his hitting streak to 10 games, his second double digit streak of the season.
