U Dub Dominates Rubber Match, Tops Rhode Island 15-5

Jared Engman garnered his first win of the season, impressing with six scoreless frames, allowing three hits with four strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Calvin Kirchoff and Case Matter each provided one scoreless inning of relief.

The Dawgs took control of the game early, plating four runs in each of the first two frames for a commanding lead.

After the first run of the game scored on a wild pitch, Coby Morales shot a single the other way to bring home Will Simpson. Michael Snyder's ground ball got Johnny Tincher home and Jeter Ybarra scored AJ Guerrero with a single up the middle to make it 4-0 after one.

Morales got scoring started in the second, notching an RBI fielder's choice, before Guerrero sent a laser beam inside the left field foul pole, a three-run shot the balloon the advantage to 8-0.

The Husky bats went dormant for a couple of innings but got hot again in the fifth. The first four batters of the inning reached without the benefit of a hit, capped by Ybarra's bases loaded HBP to bring in a run. A throwing error brought home two more before Cam Clayton's sac fly and Simpson's RBI infield single brought the run total to five for the inning and the score to 13-0.

After the Rams threatened but failed to score in the sixth, Snyder got the Dawgs back on the board with a towering blast to left, a two-run shot that gave UW a 15-0 advantage.

The Rams put together a late charge to score five in the ninth but it was far too little, too late as Washington captured the series.

โข AJ Guerrero's second inning bomb game U Dub a home run in nine of its last 10 games.
โข With four hits, four walks and an HBP, Guerrero posted a .643 on-base percentage for the series, scoring a team-high six runs.
โข Jared Engman's six innings were his most in an outing this season and the most without allowing a run since delivering seven shutout frames against UCLA last season.
โข Engman struck out four batters in the game after registering just one punchout over his first four appearances.
โข Case Matter has now made six relief appearances without allowing a run. The redshirt sophomore has surrendered just one earned run this season, sitting at a 0.79 ERA.
