Washington Concludes Regular Season with Boeing Apple Cup Matchup on Senior Night
February 28, 2023 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE β Washington (16-14, 8-11 Pac-12) wraps up the 2022-23 regular season against rival Washington State on Thursday in the Boeing Apple Cup Series finale.
Β
It is senior night and fan appreciation night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. with Eric Rothman and Steve Wojchiechowski on the call on ESPNU. Tony CastriconeΒ and Jason Hamilton will call the action on the Husky Sports Network, and locally on Sports Radio KJR-AM 950.
Β
The Matchup
Washington and Washington State meet for the 294th Boeing Apple Cup matchup in history. The storied rivalry features the seventh-most games between two opponents in NCAA DI history. The Huskies have only played Oregon and Oregon State more. UW aims for a series split for the second consecutive year after falling in Pullman two weeks ago. The last road team to win a game in the series was the Huskies in 2021. The Cougars also won in Seattle that season.
Β
Postseason Outlook
The Huskies are locked into the #8/#9 matchup in the first round of next week's Pac-12 Tournament. They can secure the No. 8 seed with a win Thursday or a Stanford loss. If UW wins and Stanford loses the Huskies' first round opponent would be Colorado. A win over Washington State paired with Colorado win on Saturday also pits the Huskies and Buffaloes against each other as the eight and nine seeds, respectively. A Huskies loss coupled with a Colorado loss and two Stanford wins would guarantee the No. 9 seed for Washington and a matchup against the Cardinal. If the Huskies lose and Colorado and Stanford both win out, Washington earns the No. 8 seed and would play Colorado.
Β
Milestones
Head Coach Mike Hopkins became the sixth UW coach to win 100 games following the team's win over Oregon State. Jamal Bey passed Darnell Gant for most games played in a Husky uniform when he checked into his 141st game against Arizona. Keion Brooks Jr. scored his 1,000th career point with a first-half three against ASU. Noah Williams eclipsed the 1,000-point mark at USC.
Β
Last Time Out
Down 8-0 at the start, Washington could not secure a lead and ultimately fell to Stanford 81-69 Sunday to snap a three-game winning streak. Bey led Washington with 21 points and eight rebounds and Keion Brooks Jr. added 17 points, going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Bey led the team in scoring for the second time in three games and became the third different Husky to eclipse 20 points in the past four games. The Cardinal were the first team to have five in double figures against UW since Oregon State in February of 2021. Game recap
