SEATTLE – The final race of the 2023 Dempsey Indoor season saw a Husky cross the line first, throwing his body over the line and collapsing in exhaustion. That athlete, Bruno Comin Pescador, punched his ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships with the effort, a fitting end to the indoor home season for Washington, which will look to make a big impression at NCAAs in two weeks in New Mexico.
Comin Pescador, the first year Husky from Santander, Spain, capped off an outstanding two day heptathlon competition with a win in the final 1,000-meters, as he finished first in all seven of the events en route to a huge score of 6,061 points. He joins Jeremy Taiwo as the only Huskies to break the 6k mark in the heptathlon, and that put him from just outside the top-16 nationally this season up to No. 4 to lock up a nationals bid.
His efforts were both aided and challenged by teammates Jami Schlueter and Ollie Thorner. Schlueter also had far and away his best indoor multi, posting multiple personal-bests and finishing with a score of 5,618 that was nearly four-hundred points better than his old PR. It put Schlueter up to No. 3 in school history. Thorner's individual score was stymied by the high jump on Friday, but he still battled through the three events today, and acted as a pace-setter for Comin Pescador in the final 1,000-meters.
A School Record changed hands between teammates today, as redshirt freshman Kaia Tupu-South had a massive personal-best in the shot put to break the record that MaKayla Kelby has been holding and extending the past few seasons. Kelby had just set the record again at the Husky Classic at 55-10 ½. But today on her fourth attempt, Tupu-South connected for a toss of 56-1 ¼ which at the time was nearly three full feet better than any other mark of her season. Tupu-South would have another strong throw on her sixth round, splitting the difference between her old PR and her new School Record, going 54-7 ½.
That mark put the New Zealand native up to 21st nationally, just a few inches away from the top-16, and ranks her third among all freshmen. Kelby had a another solid best today of 54-10 ¼ as they look to continue pushing each other to new records in the outdoor season to come.
In the sprints today, Anthony Smith matched his 60-meters PR of 6.78 seconds and Danielle Hunter led the women with a 7.70 time.
At 400-meters, Daniel Gaik won his heat in a time of 47.70, just ahead of a 47.81 finish from Jonathan Birchman. Sam Baricevic lowered his PR to 48.61, winning his heat. Anna Terrell had a season-best 56.20 on the women's side in another heat victory.
Another heat win came from freshman Chloe Foerster in the women's 800-meters. She took a tenth off her PR in a time of 2:05.71, taking sole possession of No. 5 in school history.
Anna Gibson sharpened up for nationals with another strong mile run, as she took second in the top heat in 4:33.41, while Sophie O'Sullivan finished in 4:37.36. Racing unattached, Kayley DeLay had a strong run of 4:35.65.
A couple Husky men raced unattached in the 3,000-meters, as Ed Trippas continues to train towards his signature event outside, the steeplechase, and he clocked a 7:57.93 time today, while freshman James Crabtree ran 8:11.46 unattached.
Prestin Artis had a PR for the fourth of his five indoor competitions today, closing out his first indoor season as a Dawg with a victory in the long jump. He went 25-5 ¼ on his fourth-round jump, improving his No. 4 mark in school history. That ranks Artis 26th in the nation this season, just four inches out of an NCAA Championships spot.
Ida Eikeng worked on two more events for her NCAA pentathlon today, as she cleared 5-7 in the high jump and long jumped a best of 19-8.
Sunday, a group of Husky mid-distance runners will wrap up the regular season with some last miles and 800-meters at the BU Last Chance Invite at the Boston University track. The men's mile is set to start at 9:05 a.m., then the women's and men's 800-meters go consecutively at 11:10 a.m.
