SAN JOSE, Calif. – While the Husky bats took charge early, the defense stole the show late Thursday afternoon against San Jose State (2-2) in a 7-6 Washington (3-2) win at Excite Park.

Josh Emanuels got the win out of the bullpen, delivering in the clutch to post two shutout innings. Case Matter got the save, while starter Reilly McAdams was strong in a no decision with two runs allowed on three hits over 4.1 innings.

The Huskies got off to a hot start, with the first three batters reaching and Coby Morales putting UW on the board with a single through the right side to plate Cam Clayton. San Jose native Jeter Ybarra tacked on another run with an RBI single of his own, putting the Dawgs up 2-0 heading to the home half.

After McAdams set down the Spartans in order, Clayton came back in the second with authority, clattering a line drive off the left field foul pole to extend the Husky lead to 3-0.

Washington was held off the board for a couple of innings before Johnny Tincher added onto the lead, pummeling a solo homer well past the left field wall. However, SJSU responded in the bottom half striking for a pair to cut the lead in half.

Three straight walks to begin the home half of the seventh spelled trouble for UW as San Jose State brought all three runners around to take a 5-4 lead. However, Emanuels came out of the pen to limit the damage, aided by a perfect strike from left field by Cole Miller to cut down a runner at the plate.

The lead didn't last long as the Huskies had an immediate response, taking advantage of a Spartan error to tie the game. With runners at the corners, Sam DeCarlo came through clutch, lining a single up the middle to bring home Miller, leveling the score at 5-5.

SJSU looked odds on to reclaim the advantage in the home half of the eighth as Emanuels worked himself into danger on a single, error and HBP to load the bases with no outs. With his back against the wall, the redshirt sophomore came up with the goods, striking out back-to-back batters before inducing a fly out to get out unscathed.

With momentum on its side, Washington capitalized. Coby Morales walked with one out and was replaced on the bag by Luke Rohleder. Michael Snyder followed by sneaking a double inside the left line and Rohleder turned on the jets, racing all the way around from first to give the Dawgs the lead back.

Shortly after, AJ Guerrero blooped a single into left to add a run of insurance, making it 7-5 with three outs left to secure.

While they didn't come easy, those outs eventually came. The single sandwiched by two walks loaded the bases with no outs. But that's when the Husky outfield stepped up.

First up was Luke Rohleder, who charged hard on a blooper to right and came down with a diving catch for out number one on the sacrifice.

A few pitches later, Jeriah Lewis lifted a shallow fly to left. Guerrero squeezed it, took a step and let fly, unleashing a perfect seed to the plate just ahead of the runner. Tincher applied the tag and the home plate umpire rung up the runner as the Husky dugout went into a frenzy.

UW will return to Excite Park for game two of the series on Friday, taking on SJSU at 1 p.m. PT. There will be no broadcast, but live stats will be available at HuskyStats.com
