UW Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Santa Clara
February 19, 2023 | Baseball
Game One | SCU 13, UW 7
Things got off to a hot start for the Dawgs but UW (1-2) couldn't keep momentum rolling, allowing 10 unanswered runs as Santa Clara (2-1) earned a 13-7 comeback victory.
Making his Husky debut, Kiefer Lord provided five strong innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out nine. Reilly McAdams took the loss out of the bullpen, allowing six runs over 2.2 frames.
Will Simpson got UW off to a strong start, hammering a solo bomb to dead center in the first. Washington strung together four hits in the third, including RBI knocks from Johnny Tincher and Michael Snyder, to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
After the Broncos pulled back three runs in the home half, RBI doubles from Sam DeCarlo and Simpson put things at 7-3 in favor of the Huskies in the fourth.
However, a leadoff home run from Jack Harnisch in the bottom of the fourth started the turnaround for Santa Clara. The Broncos went on to score three runs in the sixth to tie the game and added another three in both the seventh and eighth.
On the other side, SCU held the Huskies scoreless through the final five frames, finishing off the comeback.
Game Two | SCU 4, UW 2
The Huskies were unable to bounce back in a tight second game of the twin billing, dropping a 4-2 pitcher's duel.
Lefty Stu Flesland III got the starting nod and was effective, allowing two runs and striking out five. Flesland retired the last eight he saw but was forced to exit after four full. Freshman Grant Cunningham was impressive in his debut despite wearing the loss, surrendering two runs with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings before handing the ball to Gianluca Shinn in the eighth.
The Broncos scratched across a pair of runs in the second to grab an early lead, highlighted by Dawson Brigman's RBI double.
After leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the next two innings, UW finally broke through and evened the game in the fifth. Colin Blanchard and Simpson got things started with a pair of singles and Tincher and Snyder went on to draw a walk and an HBP with the bases loaded, leveling the score at two apiece.
With Cunningham coming on in relief, the Broncos responded in the home half, bringing in Brigman on Malcom William's single up the middle to reclaim the lead.
The freshman was able to settle in and hold Santa Clara down until the eighth, when SCU added a run of insurance to make it 4-2.
The Huskies put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth through an error and a Cam Clayton double but couldn't capitalize.
