Huskies Charge Back, Take Game Four from Santa Clara 10-7
February 20, 2023 | Baseball
Case Matter earned the win out of the bullpen, finishing the final two innings with one unearned run allowed and four strikeouts. Josh Emanuels provided three shutout innings of relief, striking out four himself, while Isaac Yeager collected a pair of outs without allowing a run.
Some early command trouble from the Huskies got Santa Clara started early as back-to-back walks with the bases loaded put the home side up 2-0 after the opening frame.
UW responded to tie the game the next half inning, stringing together three singles to load the bases before bringing home two runs of its own on a McKay Barney walk and a Cam Clayton RBI grounder.
The Broncos reclaimed the lead in the fourth, piecing together five singles in the frame to put a four up in the inning, making it 6-2.
Once again, the Dawgs had an answer. After cutting the deficit in half in the fifth on a Michael Snyder RBI single and a Cole Miller bases-loaded walk, Will Simpson tattooed a two-run shot in the sixth, drawing the score level at six runs apiece.
Both teams squandered chances to take a lead in the late going, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth, respectively.
However, the Dawgs wouldn't be denied in the ninth. Miller led off the inning with a double to put UW in business and came around to give the Huskies the lead on Clayton's single down the right field line.
Coby Morales delivered a sac fly to center for a run of insurance and Snyder tacked on a pair with a single to the right-center gap, putting the Huskies up 10-6 with three outs to collect.
From there, Matter did the rest. The Broncos were able to pull back a run thanks to a two-out error but an infield pop up completed the comeback as the Huskies secured the four-game split.
