Washington Set For Primetime Showdown With No. 7 Gonzaga
December 07, 2023 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington (5-3) hosts No. 7 Gonzaga (7-1) Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Roxy Bernstein and Sean Farnham have the call on ESPN2. Tony Castricone and Jason Hamilton will call the action on the Husky Sports Network and locally on Sports Radio KJR 93.3 FM.
The Huskies aim to improve to 4-2 this season against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year after beating Montana State on Tuesday.
A sold-out crowd will pack Hec Ed for the Purple Out game. Fans attending should wear purple. It is also the final chance to contribute to the Winter Supplies Drive, where fans can bring new or used items to Alaska Airlines Arena. Donations benefit Seattle's Union Gospel Mission.
Saturday's game is sold out. For fans looking for tickets, a limited number of full season ticket options, starting at just $190, are available while supplies last. Visit SeatGeek, the official ticket marketplace of Washington Athletics, for single game tickets.
The Matchup
This is the 50th meeting between Washington and Gonzaga with UW holding a 29-20 advantage. The Bulldogs have won the last seven games and 14 of the last 15. Gonzaga has also won 16-straight games against Pac-12 opponents. The Huskies' last win came at home in 2005. UW has not beaten a ranked opponent since 2019 and has not beaten a top-10 opponent since 2018. Saturday's game is sold out and is a Purple Out at Hec Ed.
Last Time Out
Franck Kepnang finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Washington to an 85-61 victory over Montana State on Tuesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. It was his first double-double this season and the second of the senior's career. Sahvir Wheeler had 14 points and five assists and recorded his 700th career assist. Paul Mulcahy notched the 500th assist of his career.
Top Dawgs
Keion Brooks Jr. ranks top-five in the Pac-12 in points and rebounds. Paul Mulcahy and Sahvir Wheeler both rank in the top-three in the Pac-12 and top-20 in the country in assists per game. No other team has two players among the top-20 assists leaders. Wheeler is the active DI leader in assists (704). Mulcahy ranks 15th (500).
The Returners
UW is one of three Pac-12 teams to return multiple All-Conference honorees, behind only USC. Preseason first-team All-Conference choice Keion Brooks Jr. headlines the core of returners as the leading returning scorer in the entire Pac-12. He averaged 17.7 points and 6.7 rebounds to earn Second Team All-Pac-12 honors. Braxton Meah is back for another season in purple and gold after shooting over 70 percent in 2022-23 to lead the league and set a new single-season Husky record. He was selected to the All-Defensive team after averaging 1.6 blocks per game.
Koren Johnson enters his sophomore season following a stellar freshman campaign in which he racked up 34 steals, which were tied for second on the team. Franck Kepnang adds depth to the frontcourt after missing the majority of the 2022-23 season due to injury.
The Newcomers
Kentucky grad transfer Sahvir Wheeler highlights an experienced group of newcomers. Wheeler twice led the SEC in assists, both times ranking in the top five in the NCAA with over six helpers per game.
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Nebraska), Nate Calmese (Lamar), Anthony Holland (Fresno State) Paul Mulcahy (Rutgers) and Moses Wood (Portland) also arrived in Seattle via the transfer portal. Four-star guard Wesley Yates III headlines the freshman class of four.
Signing Day
Head Coach Mike Hopkins and the Huskies signed four-star guard Casmir Chavis to a letter of intent on National Signing Day Wednesday, the Huskies' first commit in the 2024 class.
New at Alaska Airlines Arena
New LED lights will not only greatly enhance gameday energy and the fan experience, but the technology also supports UW's focus on sustainability. Complete with instant on/off and color takeover capabilities, new LED lighting will enhance team entrances and create other special moments in the arena.
The Huskies will also be playing on a new surface with a redesigned court.
