Sahvir Wheeler Earns First Pac-12 Player Of The Week Honor
December 18, 2023 | Men's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – Following a 19-point, 14-assist performance which led Washington to a comeback win over Seattle University, Sahvir Wheeler has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week.
Wheeler caught fire with less than five minutes remaining in the second half on Sunday, scoring or assisting on 10 of the Huskies' last 12 points in regulation, culminating in the game-tying layup as time expired.
The nation's active career assist leader kept the energy going through two overtime periods and scored or assisted on 21 of the team's last 32 points to complete UW's largest comeback since 2017.
Wheeler's 14 assists tied a career high and were the most by a Husky since current Associate Head Coach Will Conroy had 14 against California in 2005. It's tied the fourth-highest single game total by a Husky.
Wheeler made eight of his 15 shots and also grabbed four rebounds against the Redhawks. It was his second double-double of the season.
He eclipsed 700 career assists last week against Montana State and is now tied with J.J. Barea and Andre Miller for 102nd on the all-time list.
The speedy point guard leads the Pac-12 and ranks fifth in Division I with 7.3 assists per game. He is the first Husky to win the award since Jamal Bey in 2021.
