Shorthanded Dawgs Still Push No. 3 Stanford To Four
October 06, 2023 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Down a pair of starters is not the idea way to face the No. 3 team in the country. But big nights from outside hitters Madi Endsley and Kierstyn Barton helped the Husky volleyball team hang with the Cardinal tonight for four entertaining sets, with 3,740 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena hoping for the upset.

Ultimately Stanford closed out a 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 win to go to 5-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies dropped to 1-4, with three of those losses against current top-five teams. Tonight the Dawgs had to scrap without their anchor on defense, libero Lauren Bays, and their leading attacker for the year, May Pertofsky, both out with injuries.

"When we first started, Stanford came out serving tough, but I was proud of their response in that second set and beyond," said Head Coach Leslie Gabriel. "They came out and fought and gave them a run for their money. I told the team we're getting better. We're just a couple of plays away from being able to finish some of these matches. It's just about consistency. But I'm proud of the effort from everyone out there.

It was Washington's first Pac-12 home match after spending the past three weeks on the road, and the fans did their part. Head Coach Leslie Gabriel said, "It was loud in here, they kept the energy up. It was fun being back home with our fans."

The Huskies hit .226 but the Cardinal were an efficient .402 on the attack, hitting over .600 in the first and third sets. Stanford had high-risk, high-reward serving especially with Bays out of the Husky lineup, as the Cardinal had 14 aces but 18 service errors. The Huskies aced Stanford seven times, missing eight serves. Stanford also had a 10.0 to 7.0 edge in blocking.

Barton was impressive in her first home match against a Top-10 opponent, as the freshman from Chandler, Ariz. had 15 kills to lead the Huskies, hitting .294, adding one ace and a block. Endsley had 13 kills on a .346 percentage, including a stellar fourth set where she kept the Dawgs nipping on Stanford's heels, as she had 6 kills on 8 swings in set four.

Molly Wilson had 35 assists and seven digs, plus two solo blocks. Grace Zilbert was in the libero spot for the first time as a Husky, and she had eight digs and two aces.
Set One: Audra Wilmes had the first Husky kill and she served an early ace as the teams were even through ten points. But Stanford then went on a 7-0 run to take control and the Huskies were unable to make a run to get back into it. Stanford finished it out, 25-15, hitting a scorching .609.

Set Two: Grace Zilbert aced the Cardinal to set an early tone. A 3-0 run capped by a Wilson solo block made it 7-5, Dawgs. Stanford answered with a 6-1 run to force a Husky timeout at 8-11. A Wilmes kill and a Barton ace tied it again at 11 apiece. The Dawgs pushed ahead by two on a Hani-Endsley rejection for 16-14. At 17-all, the Dawgs used another 3-0 run to force a Stanford timeout, Barton ending a tremendous rally with a crosscourt kill. The Huskies kept siding out to keep Stanford at arm's length, with a kill from Katy Wessels earning set points. UW took it, 25-21, hitting .421 and corralling Stanford at a .200 mark. Barton's four kills on seven swings led the offense.

Set Three: Washington fell behind big early in the third, trailing by seven at 3-10, but UW worked its way back into the set. Maeve Griffin had a 5-0 service run with two aces, and a Wessels kill had UW within two at 9-11. Stanford regained momentum and went back up by five points, but another Husky push cut it to 15-17 and force a Cardinal timeout after Elise Hani killed a Wilson set. Out of the break, Endsley aced the Cardinal for a one-point set, but Stanford got an ace back to make it 17-20. Barton had a kill for 18-20, but then Stanford had two more aces to close on a 5-1 run to earn the 25-19 victory. Again, the Cardinal hit .600 while UW hit .200.

Set Four: UW had another early hole, down 1-5, but after a timeout the Huskies had a 5-1 run of their own to tie it at 6-6. Stanford made another run, scoring five in a row until missing serve. Barton had consecutive kills, the second on an overpass off the Wilson serve, to cut it back to a two-point gap at 10-12. A Hani-Endsley block and an Endsley kill made it a one-point set at 15-16, but the Dawgs couldn't get even, and Stanford got back up four. A final UW push got within two points twice, the last at 19-21, but Stanford finished it out, 25-21. Endsley was stellar in the final set, getting six kills on eight swings, and Barton had five.
