Washington Controls Play but Falls at No. 5 Arizona 70-67
January 05, 2023 | Men's Basketball
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – Washington started strong and led for 28 minutes but could not connect on a tying bucket on the last possession which gave No. 5 Arizona a 70-67 win Thursday night.
PJ Fuller II started the game 3-for-3 from three-point range and paced the Huskies with nine first-half points.
The Wildcats struggled against Washington's zone most of the night, missing their first 10 shots of the second half.
Washington (9-7, 1-4) pulled within 70-67 with 18 seconds left and got the ball back after Azuolas Tubelis missed a free throw but Keion Brooks Jr.'s attempt at a game-tying three just missed the mark.
"I thought our effort tonight was high-level," Head Coach Mike Hopkins said after the game. "In the first half we shared the ball as well as we've shared the ball all year."
Brooks and Cole Bajema had 16 points apiece for Washington.
Arizona struggled to find seams in the middle of the Husky zone and labored to get open shots on numerous half-court possessions.
The Wildcats had just as many problems on defense, repeatedly leaving the Huskies open for threes in transition and kickouts while falling into a 38-24 hole.
Washington led 42-41 at halftime after hitting 6 of 13 from deep. The Huskies couldn't have asked for a much better start at both ends of the floor while building the 14-point lead.
It was just the second time all season the Wildcats were held to under 75 points.
Washington gets a shot at redemption against Arizona at Hec Ed on January 28. The Huskies' next game will be at Arizona State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN.
