January 08, 2023 | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) – Washington (9-8, 1-5) scored the final 12 points of Sunday's contest but ran out of time against Arizona State, ultimately falling 73-65.
Keyon Menifield converted a traditional three-point play to cut Washington's deficit to 54-46 with 6:48 to play but Arizona State would not relent. Menifield finished with eight assists and five rebounds – both career highs – to compliment ten points.
"We made a run and cut it to eight," Head Coach Mike Hopkins said. "But the crowd continued to stay in it and we could not get any closer."
Keion Brooks Jr. had nine points and nine rebounds in the first half before finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Noah Williams scored a season-high 15 for the Huskies and Jamal Bey added 12 points.
Both teams combined for 34 fouls and early trouble for Braxton Meah limited him to 14 minutes. Neither team shot the ball well from three-point range. The Huskies finished at 28% while the Sun Devils used a strong second half to reach 32%. Arizona State shot 54% from the field in the second half and finished shooting 29 of 71 (41%) with 23 assists.
UW will host ASU on Jan. 26 for just the third game at Hec Ed in eight meetings.
Up next Washington returns home to face Stanford on Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available.
