Bears Have No Answer For Husky Bats In 20-0 Rout
May 19, 2022 | Baseball
BOTTOM OF 1
McKay Barney led off with a beautiful bunt to third and beat out the throw. Cam Clayton walked advancing Barney into scoring position. He then stole third putting runners on the corners. Johnny Tincher stepped in next and drove an RBI single to left field. One out later, Guerrero drove a single to right field to load the bases. A Michael Snyder single moved everyone around scoring Clayton. A Dicochea RBI single to the shortstop followed, moving everyone up 90 feet again. Walks to Ben Smith and Josh Urps brought two more across. One out later, Clayton walked to plate another. A pitching change delivered a much needed final out for the Bears, but not before the Huskies had set the tone for the game with a 6-0 lead.
BOTTOM OF 4
Cam Clayton jumped on the first pitch in the fourth and crushed it to left center for a triple. One out later, Simpson reached on a fielder's choice as the Bears' shortstop made a great play firing home to get Clayton at the plate. Simpson then got crafty on first and took off early for second, sparking confusion and a balk from the pitcher handing Simpson second base. AJ Guerrero dug in next and drove the ball down the left field line. Simpson rounded third and plated another run to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
BOTTOM OF 5
The Huskies were still hungry in the fifth and went right back to work. Christian Dicochea led off with a deep drive over the wall in left field to add another to the board for the Dawgs. Two outs later, Barney doubled to left center. Clayton followed with an identical double of his own scoring Barney. Then Tincher singled through the left side scoring Clayton to give the Dawgs a double-digit lead at 10-0. They weren't done yet though as Simpson doubled down the left field line scoring pinch runner Preston Viltz all the way from first. Then Guerrero feasted on the first pitch he saw and crushed a 2-run home run. Michael Snyder followed with a double, but the Bears would soon find that elusive final out bringing the fifth to a close with the Huskies up 13-0.
BOTTOM OF 6
The Bears grabbed an early out in the sixth, but then the Huskies were off again. Dalton Chandler pinch hit for Josh Urps and singled to third base. Colby Wallace pinch hit for Barney and sent a laser out to right field. Clayton followed with a single to left to load the bases. Viltz stepped in next and drove a single through the right side sending everyone up 90 feet, including Chandler across the dish. Michael Brown pinch hit for Simpson and took total advantage of the opportunity launching a double to right center that scored all three baserunners. With the score now 17-0. Later in the inning, Nick Hovland stepped to the plate and drove a two-out single to left field advancing Brown to third. Karl Koerper got the nod next and pinch hit for Dicochea. After timing up ball one, he jumped on the second pitch sending a moon shot over the fence in right field to give the Huskies a 20-0 lead. The Bears would finally get that elusive third out as Clayton lined out to short.
- Starter Jared Engman held the Bears scoreless over six innings, giving up just two hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts.
