Washington Heads to Corvallis for Pac-12 Opener
November 30, 2022 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington (6-1) takes on a Pac-12 opponent for the first time in the 2022-23 season on Thursday as the Huskies travel to Oregon State for a 7 p.m. tilt on ESPNU. Eric Rothman and Dan Dickau have the call nationally and Tony Castricone and Jason Hamilton will call the action on the Husky Sports Network, and locally on Sports Radio KJR-AM 950.
Thursday will mark the 309th game between the Huskies and the Beavers, a series that dates back to 1904. The Huskies have played the Beavers more than any opponent with the exception of Oregon. UW swept the season series in 2021-22 and has won five of the last six matchups.
The Huskies enter Thursday having won the last three games dating back to two strong wins en route to the Wooden Legacy championship.
Last Time Out
Keion Brooks Jr. scored 20 points and Braxton Meah didn't miss a shot while scoring 18 points as Washington (6-1) used a second-half blitz to beat cross-town rival Seattle 77-66 on Monday night in front of 7,537 fans. The Huskies have pushed their consecutive-game win streak against the Redhawks to 18 in a series that started in an NCAA Tournament West Regional game in 1953. Game Recap
The Team
Graduate student Jamal Bey is the leading returning scorer and ranks in the program's top-10 in career steals. The Huskies added four transfers from Division I schools -- Keion Brooks Jr. (Kentucky), Franck Kepnang (Oregon), Braxton Meah (Fresno State) and Noah Williams (Washington State) -- that bring with them 10 combined years of high-level playing experience. The foursome entered the year having played in 278 games (112 starts). Returners Cole Bajema and PJ Fuller II played in all 32 games in 2021-22 while Langston Wilson factored into 28.
Signing Day
Four-star recruit Wesley Yates III (Beaumont, Texas/Beaumont United) signed a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 16, announcing his commitment to Washington. Yates is the 37th-ranked prospect on ESPN's Top-100. The signing continues the momentum built from last year's class, which includes the No. 1 rated player in the state of Washington, Tyler Linhardt (Seattle, Wash./King's HS) and guard Keyon Menifield Jr. (Mount Morris, Mich./Phoenix [Ariz.] Prep).
Head Coach Mike Hopkins (95-81 at UW/6th season)
Hopkins is a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, winning the honor in each of his first two seasons with the Huskies as he led UW to back-to-back 20 win seasons with postseason appearances each year, including the NCAA Second Round in 2019. Hopkins has coached four McDonald's All-Americans and has mentored five players that have been selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. During his 22 years as an assistant at Syracuse, Hopkins was a part of teams that reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times including the 2003 National Championship team, four Final Four teams, five Elite Eights and ten Sweet 16s.
