Scardina Lifts No. 3 UW Past Seattle U With Golden Goal
September 20, 2021 | Men's Soccer
From start to finish, it was an incredibly intense back-and-forth affair, with 37 combined fouls and seven total yellow cards given out. At one point in the second half, Seattle U had a 13-6 advantage in shots, before the Huskies rallied for eight unanswered, including the one that decided the match.
"Half of these guys grew up playing with each other. They really don't want to lose. They're all tough Seattle kids and they really lay it all out there," said head coach Jamie Clark. "I have more respect for Seattle U. I think they're one of the best teams in the country."
The first 45 minutes saw incredibly physical play that resulted in 16 total fouls and saw two players from each team handed a yellow card. The Redhawks would have two shots on goal, both stopped by Husky goalkeeper Sam Fowler. The Huskies did not register a shot on goal, although Ilijah Paul did have an attempt right in front of the net blocked by a Seattle U defender.
Things opened up for both sides in the second half, with each squad doubling their shot total from the first half. Just over five minutes into the half, a long throw in gave UW the first goal of the night. Charlie Ostrem launched the ball in and Ryan Sailor flicked it on to the waiting head of Kendall Burks, who put it in the back of the net.

The Redhawks were undeterred, and unleashed an unrelenting attack in the following minutes. After creating numerous chances, Seattle U was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Declan McGlynn found the back of the net, much to the enjoyment of the 1,377 fans in attendance at Championship Field.
From that point on, the Huskies would try to get back that goal, and put up seven straight shots, although none found the net. For the second straight match, UW would head to golden goal overtime.
The Huskies seized control of the match in the first period of extra time and Imanol Rosales nearly provided a moment of inspiration with a free kick, although it just caromed off the crossbar. The attack would persist, and Rosales would play a key role in the decisive moment of the match.
With under two minutes left in the first overtime period, Dylan Teves made a run into the left side of the box. He crossed it low to a waiting Rosales, who left a perfect ball for Nick Scardina to blast into the lower-right corner of the net.

"Once I was following the the ball into the box, I knew the ball was going to fall somewhere," Scardina said of the build up. "I just made sure to get myself in there. Imanol picked his head up and found me and I fired it home. You just know when you get that contact on the ball. It just felt right."
"It's a crosstown rivalry. It's always good when you're playing for a trophy. It felt great to get the win and bring the trophy back home."
Scardina's goal lifted Washington to their third straight win over Seattle U and helped the Huskies move to 5-1 all-time in WAC/101 Club Cup matches against the Redhawks.
"Once I was following the the ball into the box, I knew the ball was going to fall somewhere," Scardina said of the build up. "I just made sure to get myself in there. Imanol picked his head up and found me and I fired it in."
The Huskies also remain undefeated at 6-0 heading into their final non-conference match of the season on Friday night at Portland.
