Guerrero Shines, but Huskies Can't Hold Off No. 11 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Washington Huskies (17-23, 3-14) dropped their second straight gameΒ to the No. 11 Oregon Ducks (29-11, 13-7) on Saturday afternoon at PK Park.
It was a day where UW starter Tyson Guerrero had his best outing of the season, but things broke in favor of the Ducks once he exited the game.Β
Guerrero pitched a season-high 6.0 innings while not allowing any runs, marking his first quality start of the season as well. Despite only one strikeout in his 18 recorded outs in the game, Guerrero induced 9 ground outsΒ to help keep Oregon off the scoreboard,Β
Similar to Friday night, the Huskies were able to put plenty of runners on base, but struggled to push them across. In the second inning, they put two on with just one out before grounding into an inning-ending double play. With Michael BrownΒ on second in the third inning, Noah Hsue singled into left field, but Brown was thrown out at home trying to score. In the fourth, Will Simpson led off with a single and was bunted to second base, but two straight strikeouts ended that frame.Β
UW finally got on the board in the fifth, started by a Michael Brown leadoff walk. He went to second on a passed ball, advanced again on a single before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. UW then attempted a suicide squeeze with Johnny Tincher on third, but the bunt attempt was missed and Tincher was caught stealing to end the rally.
With Guerrero out of the game in the seventh, Oregon put runners on first and second with one out and then blasted a three-run home run to right-center to take a 3-1 lead. The Ducks added two more in the eighth to push the final score to 5-1.
The series finale between Washington and Oregon is Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m..
