UW Drops Finale to No. 10 UCLA, Still Wins Series

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Washington Huskies (10-14, 2-7) could not complete the road sweep against the No. 10 UCLA Bruins (16-9, 5-4) on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 13-2

UW did have a strong start in the game, as Michael Brown crushed a deep home run in the top of the third inning to open up the scoring.

The Bruins would take over the scoring from there, however, using a flurry of two-run home runs to jump out to an 8-1 lead. The first came in the bottom of the third, which gave UCLA a 2-1 lead. After Husky starter Nate Weeldreyer made way for Colton Charnholm, the Bruins would hit another long ball that inning to take a 4-1 lead going into the fourth. A couple more two-run shots in the fourth and fifth innings would give them an 8-1 lead. A two-out single in the fifth would push that lead to 10-1 when it was all said and done. Three more runs in the eighth inning would push it to 13-2.

The second UW run came in the sixth inning, started by a leadoff double from Michael Petrie off the wall in right field. A two-out single by Braiden Ward brought him home. With that hit, Ward has now been on base in 23-of-24 games this season.

Despite the loss, Washington returns to Seattle with a series win over a top-10 opponent. An 8-6 win on Thursday and a 7-6 win on Friday were enough to clinch the three-game series and give the Huskies their first Pac-12 series win of the season and their first series win over a top-10 team since May of 2018.

Up next for the Huskies is a three-game series at home against Arizona State, with game one scheduled for Friday night at 7:00 p.m..
