Enger, Freshmen Shine in UW Victory over LMU
March 06, 2021 | Baseball
The Huskies got on the board first for the second straight night, set up by aΒ Braiden Ward single on the first pitch of the game. After Ramon Bramasco drew a walk to put two men on, Will Simpson blasted a ground-rule double into the gap in right-center field to score Ward.
Leading off the second inning was true freshmanΒ Emilio Corona in his first career at-bat. He promptly ripped a ball into right field on the first pitch for his first career hit and set the stage for his teammates.

Carson Blatnick, another true freshman, came through with another base hit on the first pitch he saw to give UW runners on first and second. Up next, Ward hit a hard grounder to second base that got past the fielder and went into right field. Corona read it well and scored on the play. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, true freshmanΒ Nick Kresnak drove a single into left field that scored Blatnick and Ward to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.Β

"We wanted to get some guys in there who we haven't had a chance to really see thatΒ we know can play," said head coach Lindsay Meggs. "Just give some life too, because they've been working. And it's great to see them get rewarded."
The youngsters kept pouring it on in the fifth, with Michael Brown depositing a ball in the left field corner to bring home Will Simpson. He came around to score when Corona ripped a two-out double down the left field line for his first career RBI.

During this offensive display, Jack Enger was his usual dominant self. He finished with 5.1 innings of work, struck out four Lions and did not allow an earned run. He lowered his season ERA to 0.47 and picked up the victory to go to 2-0 on the year.
In the top of the sixth, LMU did manage to get on the board, as a groundout to UW reliever Colton Charnholm brought in an unearned run.
The Huskies had an immediate answer, this time sparked by Nick Kresnak. With two outs in the inning, KresnakΒ roped a 100-mph double to the wall in left field. Kaiser Weiss would enter to pinch run for KresnakΒ and scored when the next batter, Will Simpson, singled to left field. That made it a 7-1 lead for UW, which would be plenty.
The Lions scored once more in the seventh on a bases-loaded single, but Stu Flesland III induced an inning-ending double play to the next batter to escape without further damage. FleslandΒ III remained in for the eighth, where he worked a 1-2-3 inning. He made way for David Rhodes in the ninth, who struck out the sideΒ to secure the win.Β
