Huskies Ranked No. 8 To Start Spring
January 05, 2021 | Volleyball
SEATTLE - The AVCA announced its spring preseason Top-25 coaches poll today, with the Huskies starting out as the No. 8 team in the country. In this unconventional season, the spring poll is the second "preseason" poll for 2020-21, as a number of teams and conferences went ahead with matches during the fall. Now more conferences, notably including the Pac-12 and Big Ten, are set to enter the fray, with the spring poll now comprising some teams that played as many as 16 matches in the fall with teams like the Huskies that have yet to compete.
Washington will play a conference-only season slated to begin later in January. NCAA tournament selections will be made on April 4 but many logistics are still being determined.
The Huskies finished the 2019 season ranked sixth after advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in the last five years. UW has a strong mix of returning experience led byย All-America setter Ella May Powell, and All-Pac-12 honorable mentions Lauren Sanders and Samantha Drechsel. There will also be opportunities for new players to see bigger roles, as 2019 seniors Kara Bajema, Shayne McPherson, Avie Niece, and Cailin Onoskoย took a hefty amount of production when they left with their degrees.
Wisconsin is ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll, followed by Texas, which went 14-0 in the fall, then Stanford at No. 3, Kentucky at No. 4, and Nebraska at No. 5. Other Pac-12 teams in the poll include Utah at No. 10, and UCLA at No. 22. Washington State and USC are receiving votes.
