Enger’s Strong Outing Lifts Dawgs To Win In Game One, UW Splits With Utah Valley Saturday
March 07, 2020 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The University of Washington baseball team (8-6) played its first doubleheader of the season Saturday, splitting with Utah Valley (5-11) at Husky Ballpark. Jack Enger's gem carried the Dawgs to a 5-1 win in game one before UVU bounced back for a 1-0 victory in a seven-inning contest in the nightcap.
Game One
Jack Enger (2-1) had his best outing as a Husky, as the right-hander two-hit Utah Valley in 7.0 innings, not allowing a run, while striking out a career-high nine. Dylan Lamb was effective in relief, working the final two frames and surrendering the lone UVU run on just three hits.
"I thought Jack gave us everything he had tonight," said head coach Lindsay Meggs. "He had good velocity, he threw the slider for strikes, and he competed. It's been fun to watch him continually improve."
After a scoreless first three innings, Davis Delorefice laid down a perfectly placed squeeze to score Preston Viltz after Viltz tripled to lead-off the inning.
Delorefice again delivered in the sixth, hitting a ball up the middle that bounced of second base and skipped into the outfield for an RBI single to give the Dawgs a 2-0 advantage.
UW would tack on three more insurance runs in the seventh thanks to a Michael Petrie RBI triple, Braiden Ward run-scoring single and a Viltz sacrifice fly.
Tommy Williams joined Delorefice in the two-hit club in the win.
Game Two
The Huskies pitching staff combined to allow just three hits, but UVU capitalized on a UW error in the fourth to push across the game's only run.
Logan Gerling (0-1) got the ball in game two and didn't allow an earned run or issue a walk in 4.1 innings of action. Gabe Smith took over in the fifth and was sharp out of the pen, holding Utah Valley hitless in the final 2.2 innings. Both Gerling and Smith struck out a pair.
Will Simpson smacked a double, while Tommy Williams and Noah Hsue each had a base hit to account for Washington's three hits.
UW will look to earn a series split Sunday when the Huskies and Wolverines meet in the series finale at 1:05 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
