Lumsden and Davis Win Big But UW Falls 5-2 to Pepperdine
February 08, 2020 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Ewen Lumsden picked up his first win over a ranked opponent and Jack Davis continued to win in the spring, but Washington was not able to pull out a team win over Pepperdine, falling 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies dropped to 5-3 with the loss while the Waves stayed perfect with a 5-0 record.
In doubles, each team won a match easily with Jack Davis and Alexis Alvarez winning 6-2 on court one but Thibault Cancel and Ewen Lumsden falling 6-2 on court two. Kailuhia Lam and Jack Pulliam battled for the doubles point on court three, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to trail 4-3. The Husky duo had a chance to tie it up with a deuce point but lost a long rally and trailed 5-3. They would win the next game to pull back to 5-4 but would lose the next as Pepperdine took the doubles point.
Pepperdine would clinch the match with wins at the bottom four matches, but the two top matches were entertaining ones from start to finish. At No. 2, Lumsden recorded his first collegiate victory over a ranked opponent with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory. He cruised through the first set but then trailed 3-4 in the second before rallying and pulling out the win. Lumsden improves to 10-4 on the season and is 5-3 in dual matches.
At No. 1, Jack Davis faced a tough opponent in Daniel De Jonge, who was elevated to No. 1 this week. After winning a first-set tiebreaker, Davis lost the second set 6-2. In the one-set tiebreaker, Davis jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and led 8-3 before finishing with the 10-7 win. It was his fifth-straight singles win as he remains a perfect 6-0 at No. 1 this season.
Washington returns to the courts on Sunday, hosting Eastern Washington at Noon.
