February 20, 2020 | Baseball
FRESNO, Calif. -- The Washington Huskies (2-2) continue their two-week road swing in California and head north from SoCal to Fresno State (2-1) for a three-game series against the Bulldogs at Bennett Stadium. UW is two wins shy of 2,000 in its 120-year program history. They will play at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night, 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Huskies opened their season at Loyola Marymount and dropped the first two games of the series before salvaging the final game with a two-run rally in the ninth inning. UW rode momentum into Long Beach State for a single game on Tuesday and left with a 4-1 win, featuring a career day by Christian Jones and an amazing bullpen game featuring six pitchers.
This weekend's action at Fresno State will be carried on Big West Network and 940 ESPN in Fresno. Links to live stats and video links can be found online at GoHuskies.com // Sports // Baseball // Schedule. Constant updates are also available via Twitter and Instagram: @UW_Baseball.
SERIES HISTORY VS. FRESNO STATE
Fresno State narrowly leads the all-time series 9-8. The two teams first met in the post-season in 1959 with the Bulldogs taking the three-game series, 2-1. They next met in 1984 with FSU winning big, 12-5. UW next downed the Bulldogs, 4-3, in a NCAA Regional matchup in 1992. Since the '92 meeting, the teams have played in four three-game series, the last in UW Coach Lindsay Meggs' first season in 2010. The Bulldogs won two-of-three in 2010, the only time the teams have met in Seattle. In 2009 FSU took 2 of 3 at home. The Huskies took 2 of 3 from the Bulldogs in both 1997 and 2002 -- the last time UW took a series against FSU.
NOTES FROM LAST WEEK
β’ UW dropped the first two games of its series at LMU before rallying in the 9th inning on Sunday with two runs to salvage the final game, 4-3. The Huskies had been held hitless since the second inning before their first two batters reached via hits to start the rally. UW was 0-22 when trailing after eight innings in 2019.
β’ UW walked 23 batters over 25 innings against LMU before bouncing back at Long Beach State (W, 4-1) by not walking a batter, striking out 11 and holding the Dirtbags hitless after the second inning. Five UW relievers combined to pitch six no-hit innings and striking out 8. The only runner came in the 5th inning on a hit by pitch.Β
β’ Christian Jones was a one-man wrecking crew in UW's win over LBST. He drove in a career best three of the team's four runs, had a career-high three hits, stole the first base of his career and hit his first homer since 2018. He also flashed his leather with a diving catch in right field in the 7th inning.Β
β’ Braiden Ward stole a base in each of the first four games. He now has 49 in his career and is one shy of joining UW's career top-10 list. The junior is also trying to become the first Conference player to lead the league in steals three-consecutive seasons.
β’ Junior transfer Davis Delorefice picked up a pair of saves and made two starts in the outfield in the first four games. He is UW's first legitimate two-way player since Brian Pearl in 2010.
β’ The Huskies' bullpen is 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA through four games, allowing 3 earned runs over 22.1 innings and recording 25 strikeouts and issuing 11 walks.
β’ Fourteen players have made their UW debuts in 2020. Davis Delorefice is the only newcomer that previously played at the Division I level having spent 2018 at Utah. Delorefice is among six first-time Huskies that played in at least one game at the junior college level previously. Of the eight true freshmen that have played, only two are pitchers.
