Jones’ Bat, Excellent Pitching Highlight Huskies’ 4-1 Win Over Dirtbags
February 18, 2020 | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Christian Jones had a career day collecting three RBI – two coming on a mammoth second inning home run – and six Husky pitchers combined to shutdown Long Beach State's offense as Washington (2-2) recorded a 4-1 win over the Dirtbags (2-2) at Blair Field on Tuesday night.
Jones, who missed all but three games in 2019 with a hand injury, went 3-for-4, setting a new high for runs batted in and also swiping the first base of his career. The redshirt-junior also flashed the leather, making a spectacular diving catch in right field in the seventh inning.
But it was Jones' second-inning blast – his first home run since April 29, 2018 – that got him and his teammates rolling. After Rollie Nichols reached on a perfectly placed bunt single, Jones turned on an 0-1 offering from Long Beach State starter Jonathan Carlos (0-1) and sent it way over the right-field fence for a quick two-run lead.
The Huskies weren't done in the second as Tommy Williams followed Jones' blast with a single, advanced to third on a Ramon Bramasco double and scored when Michael Petrie rolled out to shortstop.
It gave the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish thanks to some stellar UW pitching. Logan Gerling made his first DI start, going three strong innings, striking out three and allowing three hits – one of which was a solo homer in the second inning to Riki DeSa.
DeSa's home run proved to be the last Long Beach State hit of the night. After Gerling, five UW relievers – Nate Weeldreyer (1.2 innings), Dylan Lamb (2.1), Leo Nierenberg (0.1), Gabe Smith (1.0) and Davis Delorefice (1.0) – held the Dirtbags hitless. The only baserunner allowed by the bullpen occurred when Weeldreyer hit DeSa with a pitch in the fifth inning.
In all, every UW pitcher had at least one strikeout and combined for 11 on the night. The six pitchers also did not allow a walk.
Lamb (1-0) entered the game in the fifth and lasted 2 1/3 innings, recording three strikeouts to pick up the win.
Delorefice pitched a perfect ninth to notch his second save in as many attempts.
Jones would add an insurance run in the eighth when he chased home Nichols – who reached via a double – with a single into left field. Nichols finished the night 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. He and Jones combined for half of UW's 10 hits.
The Huskies head north on Wednesday to Fresno, Calif., where they will face the Bulldogs in a three-game series starting Friday night.
