Huskies Drop Opener Against LMU
February 14, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount took a five-run lead over the first three innings and two Lions' pitchers kept Washington hitters at bay as the Huskies dropped their season-opener at Page Field in Los Angeles, 7-1, on Friday night.
The Lions are a veteran squad that forced top-ranked UCLA to a decisive third game in last year's NCAA Regionals. Their experience on the hill and at the plate showed in the first game of 2020.
Josh Agnew (1-0) escaped several early jams and was able to cruise through five innings before the Huskies loaded the bases in the sixth inning. The only run he allowed came on a Christian Jones' sacrifice fly before exiting the game with two outs. Reliver Matt Voelker finished off the inning with a strikeout and went on to throw three more scoreless innings to finish off the game.
Noah Hsue had a pair of hits in three at bats and scored the Huskies' inaugural run of the season, but Washington (0-1) was never able to string together enough hits to overcome LMU (1-0).
The teams each had seven hits, but LMU made theirs count, especially early on. Lions' slugger Trevon Esquerra hit a first inning home run and drove in another run with a single in a three-run third inning. Catcher Cooper Uhl doubled and scored an unearned run in the second and would drive in two more runs on a third-inning single to also spark the offense.
UW starter David Rhodes (0-1) gave up five hits, five runs – four earned – walked two and struck out four in his four-inning season debut on the hill.
LMU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings off the UW bullpen to cap the scoring.
The series resumes on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. with UW righty Stevie Emanuels facing off against LMU's pre-season All-American candidate, Nick Frasso.
