Dawgs Drop 6-3 Decision To LMU
February 15, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The visiting Washington pitching staff held Loyola Marymount to four hits and struck out 13 batters, but the Lions were able to take advantage of eight walks, three UW errors and scored five unearned runs in a 6-3 win at Page Field in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The Huskies (0-2) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-out rally off LMU ace Nick Frasso but could not hold the advantage. Redshirt-freshman Preston Viltz was standing at second when junior Tommy Williams gave the Huskies their first lead of 2020 with a single to centerfield. Williams advanced to second on a passed ball and scored one pitch later via a single up the middle by senior Ramon Bramasco.
LMU struck for four unearned runs off UW starter Stevie Emanuels in the third to turn the game upside down. The first three Lions reached on a walk, catcher's interference and an error to score their first run. After an infield single tied the game up, freshman Dylan Dennis delivered a two-out, two-run single to give LMU a lead they would never relinquish.
The four unearned runs would be the only runs Emanuels would allow in 3 2/3 innings. He established a new career high with eight strikeouts and gave up three hits in just his second career start in 66 appearances. He did issue six walks – two of which wound up scoring.
LMU added a run in the sixth inning before the Huskies tallied their third run in the seventh inning. Christian Dicochea reached base on a two-out throwing error and junior transfer Davis Delorefice followed with a ringing triple into the left-center gap to cut the Lions' lead to 5-3.
LMU answered back in the seventh without the benefit of a hit when Connor Uhl walked and eventually stole home. It would be the last run of the game as the Huskies could not mount another threat on the night.
Logan Gerling pitched three solid innings of relief in his Husky debut, striking out five and allowing just one hit. He did allow two runs – only one of which was earned.
Alex Burge threw 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win and Kyle Mora went the final 3 1/3 innings to record the save.
Five different Huskies recorded a hit. Delorefice (2-for 4) had a double and triple to pace the way.
UW will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Lefty Jack DeCooman will face off against LMU left-hander Sean Paquet.
