SEATTLE – A small group of Huskies got a big week of action going today in New Mexico, as day one of the Don Kirby Invitational was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Three new Husky top-10 marks already came out of the day, with Imani Apostol and Makenna Barton grabbing individual wins.
Senior Imani Apostol got an early victory today when she won the unseeded 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 55.81 seconds. She came back in the 200-meters and ran a season-best of 24.94 while Olivia Ribera ran 24.90, and Jelani Heath ran a season-best 25.12. Aaliyah Wilson ran 25.37. On the men's side, Jason Palmer clocked a time of 49.01 in the 400-meters.
Junior Makenna Barton got a win in the first flight of the women's pole vault and leaped a new career-best. Barton made it over 13-5 3/4 on her second attempt, surpassing her old best of 13-3.
In the women's long jump, junior Hannah Rusnak set a new indoor PR with a leap of 19-6 1/4, which moved her into the indoor top-10 list in a tie for eighth. Heath went 18-9 1/4 to finish 14th in the long jump.
In the men's long jump, Sam Richmond had a best of 22-6 1/4 and Jaylen Taylor went 21-4. Bryce Fausset had a high jump make at 6-feet-8 and went out attempting 6-9 3/4.
Men's weight throwers Elijah Mason and Connor Jost both PR'd for the second meet in a row. Mason took third overall and added another two feet to his PR with a throw of 64-3, best by a Husky since 2007 and No. 4 in school history. Jost improved his 10th-best mark in school history with a throw of 61-2 1/4.
In the women's weight, Angel Nkwonta had another strong day, taking third overall with a best of 66-8 3/4.
Action resumes Friday at the Don Kirby Invite bright and early with the women's shot put at 7:30 a.m.
