Huskies Edge UCSB 4-3
January 20, 2020 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Washington got back in the win column on Monday afternoon, using a strong showing in singles highlighted by Jack Davis' upset win over a Top 10 singles player to pull out a 5-2 win over UC Santa Barbara at the Nordstom Tennis Center
Β
The Huskies, who were coming off a tough loss to No. 17 Michigan on Friday, rebounded with the victory to improve to 3-1 on the season. UCSB--which made the NCAA Tournament last season and is expected to return this year--falls to 0-2.
"No doubt we are pleased to get back on track today," said UW Head Coach Matt Anger. "To be honest, we were pretty down about not getting the doubles point and it was a total team effort for us to come out as well as we did in singles. Santa Barbara is tough and it will be a good win for us."
Β
In doubles play, the Gauchos scored the point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The match on court three was a thriller with both teams matching each other game-for-game until UCSB broke the UW serve to go up 6-5 and ended up winning 7-5.
Β
In singles, Davis picked up a huge victory at No. 1 singles, beating No. 8 ranked Joseph Guillen in the first match off. Davis struggled a bit out of the gate on court one but won the final three games to win his first set 6-3. He then cruised to a 6-3 win to be the first off.
Shortly thereafter, Brandon Wong took care of his match on Court four, winning 6-4, 6-3. On court three, Jack Pulliam cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win with Liam Puttergill clinching the match for Washington with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5. UC Santa Barbara made the final score closer by taking the matches on courts two and six.
Β
The Huskies return to the courts on Friday, hosting Grand Canyon University (0-4) at 5:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"We have a short week and it will be great to play again this coming Friday against Grand Canyon," said Anger.
