Washington Host No. 17 Michigan on Friday
January 16, 2020 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE --- After opening the season with a pair of victories last week, the Washington men's tennis team faces a tough challenge this week, welcoming No. 17 Michigan for a non-conference match on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Friday's match will be the second meeting between the two in as many years with the Wolverines edging the Huskies 5-2 in Ann Arbor last season.
Michigan opened its season with a tough 4-3 loss to No. 23 North Carolina State on Wednesday at home. The Wolverines reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, before falling to No. 6 Baylor, finishing with an 18-9 overall record and a 7-4 mark in conference action.
Michigan features the No. 5 doubles team in the country in Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar. Fenty also is ranked No. 78 in singles play with Ondrej Styler coming in ranked No. 94 individually.
The Huskies kicked the 2020 spring season off with two wins over Seattle U on Saturday, winning by identical 7-0 scores in both matches. Junior Jack Davis and sophomore Ewen Lumsden are off to great starts this season. Davis has yet to lose a singles match during the 2019-20 season, going 6-0 in the fall and winning twice on Saturday. Lumsden lost just once in the fall and is 2-0 in the spring for an 8-1 record. The two have teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot and posted an 8-1 overall record, winning six-straight matches.
Admission to the match is free with pizza served after the doubles matches are completed.
