PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Washington opened its second tournament of the fall season on Monday at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and sit in fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round. The Dawgs are at 26-over 602 (305-297) while senior Alice Duan moved up 35 spots on the leaderboard during the second round on Monday into a tie for sixth place.
"It was a tough day overall for us," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We started out well but couldn't keep any momentum going. This golf course doesn't give you any breaks and you have to think on every shot. I was proud of our team for hanging in there and working to get better."
Duan opened the day with a 7-over 79 due to errors on seven holes but she bounced back over her next 18. She responded with a 4-under 68 to close the day jumping her into a tie for sixth heading into the final round. Duan recorded 10 birdies during her 36 holes on Monday, which tied for the most on the day.
"Seeing Alice rebounding after a rough morning was good," added Mulflur. "I was proud of her for refocusing and letting go of what she did in round one to really show what she is capable of on a tough course."
Joining her in the top 15 was senior Karen Miyamoto who is in a tie for 14th at 6-over 150. The senior posted back-to-back rounds of 3-over 75 on her first day and added five birdies on the day. Right behind her was junior Rino Sasaki, as she is tied for 16th at 7-over 151 following rounds of 73-78.
Freshman Brittany Kwon is in a tie for 32nd at 10-over 154 (78-76), while fellow freshman Winnie Ng, who is competing in her first event as a Dawg, is tied for 43rd. Ng shot a 14-over 158 (80-78), on her first day, and even saw an eagle come in on her third hole of the first round.
The Huskies continue play at the Molly Collegiate on Tuesday in Portland, teeing off at 8 a.m. alongside Colorado and San Diego State.
