UW Heating Up, Beat WSU 10-2 To Clinch Boeing Apple Cup Series
May 04, 2019 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – As the weather has gotten warmer, so have the bats of the lone seniors on the Husky Baseball team. Mason Cerrillo drove in two runs and Joe Wainhouse had an RBI in Huskies' decisive four-run third inning to propel Washington (23-18, 9-11 Pac-12) to a 10-2 win over Washington State (8-33-1, 1-18-1) in the Boeing Apple Cup Series of baseball.
The Husky senior duo is undoubtedly heating up at the right time. Wainhouse has collected RBIs in seven-straight games and Cerrillo has strung together a seven-game hit streak.
"I think hitting is contagious," UW Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "We certainly had a long stretch where it was a battle for all of them just to take quality at bats. As Joe turned the corner, I think it helped Mason turn the corner."
Not surprisingly, the Huskies have heated up simultaneously. With the win, UW clinched the series in Pullman – their first series win at Bailey-Brayton Field since 2013. They have now won six of their last seven games and eight of 11 to remain in post-season contention.
By no means was it a two-man effort on Saturday in the Palouse. Braiden Ward was 5-for-6 at the plate with a career high three runs batted in and Michael Petrie chipped in three hits in his first career start in the outfield. All nine starters in the Huskies' lineup picked up at least one hit and the team pounded out 18 on the day.
"Braiden gets five hits today and Michael Petrie's hitting the ball hard – that's what you like to see," said Meggs. "You like to see them passing it down to one guy after the other."
On the mound, Jordan Jones (3-4) went five strong innings to pick up the first win by a Husky starter over a 24-game span and once again the bullpen did their job brilliantly. Jones struck out four and allowed six hits and two earned runs over five innings. Jack Enger followed Jones by throwing one-hit ball over two innings. Leo Nierenberg and Dylan Lamb each pitched hitless innings to close the game out.
For the second straight day, the Huskies scored in the first inning to grab a quick lead before fans could settle into their seats. Ward doubled off A.J. Block to start the game and eventually scored with two outs in the inning when Block spiked a pitch in front of the plate.
The Cougars would tie things up in the second inning, but Washington would explode for four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Nick Kahle broke the tie with a run-scoring single to pick up his team-leading 42nd RBI, Wainhouse followed by collecting a RBI with a run-scoring double and Cerrillo continued tormenting his former team with a two-run single that scored both Kahle and Wainhouse.
UW would build a 7-1 lead, thanks to a Wainhouse home run in the fifth and a Ward RBI single in the sixth. For Wainhouse, it was his fourth home run over the last six games. He moved into a tie for eighth all-time in UW history with 28 career long balls.
WSU would score a run in the sixth to make it 7-2, but UW would answer back with a pair of runs in the seventh. Ben Baird would score the eighth run of the day, hustling home after an error at first base, and Ward would collect his second RBI of the day on an infield single.
Ward would collect his third RBI of the game in the ninth when he smacked his fifth hit of the game.
The Huskies will go for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Washington.
