UW Headed Back To Lake Natoma For 117th IRAs

The No. 2-ranked Washington men's rowing team returns to Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., for the 117th Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships this Friday through Sunday, May 31-June 2.
The Huskies, who won their third straight Pac-12 Championship on May 19 at Lake Natoma, will compete in all four heavyweight categories (first, second and third varsity eights & varsity four) at IRAs, which return to the Sacramento-area site that hosted the 2009, 2013 and 2017 regattas.
"We have a deep team led by a tough and tested senior class," head coach Michael Callahan said. "This is their final run down the course for Washington and that's always special. I'm excited to see this team's best. These are the moments we enjoy the most as a team.
"It's fun to have the IRA on the West Coast again this year," Callahan added. "Our families, alumni and friends travel well and make it feel like a home regatta. We have amazing support on the beach and the guys feed off that."
Last year at Mercer Lake in New Jersey, Washington won national titles in the second and third varsity eights and earned their 15th Ten Eyck Trophy as the overall points winner, but came in second in the varsity eight grand final. In men's collegiate rowing, the varsity eight winner is considered the national champion (rather than the overall points winner). The grand final for the varsity four was canceled in 2018, due to poor conditions.
