Kahle, Burgmann On Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List
April 10, 2019 | Baseball
USA Baseball unveiled the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list on Wednesday, and Washington was one of seven schools with two players on the list. UW junior catcher Nick Kahle and redshirt-sophomore Josh Burgmann were among the 40 players that will move closer to being named the top amateur baseball player in the country.
"It's no surprise to me that both Nick and Josh are on the Golden Spikes Watch List," Washington 10th-year Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "Nick has been in the middle of everything that we've done offensively and he has been almost perfect behind the plate. As far as I'm concerned he's as good as there is.
"And every time Josh takes the mound our buys believe we should win. Along with having great numbers, Josh just makes the players around him better. He's a big-game pitcher, and that rubs off on the rest of us."
Kahle has emerged as one of the most complete catchers in the country, ranking among the best in both hitting and defense. The Simi Valley, Calif., native ranks second nationally with a .516 on-base percentage. He has reached base safely in 26 of 27 games and has reached base at least twice in 20 contests.
His .420 average is second among Pac-12 players and is 12th overall nationally. Kahle, who was All-Pac-12 in 2018, also ranks third in the Pac-12 in walks (29), fourth in slugging percentage (.682), seventh in RBI (32) and tied for seventh in home runs (6).
He is even tougher in Pac-12 play. Through 12 Conference games he leads everyone in batting average (.500), slugging percentage (.875) and on-base percentage (.625).
Defensively, Kahle is among the top catchers in the nation. He has thrown out 8-of-11 would be stealers – including all six attempts during Pac-12 play.
Burgmann has developed into one of the nation's premiere pitchers in 2019. The right-hander from Nanaimo, B.C., leads the Pac-12 with 62 strikeouts, which ranks 26th nationally.
For the year, Burgmann is 3-1 with a 2.29 ERA in eight games. Of his eight starts on the season, six have been quality starts. He is holding opponents to a .228 batting average and has recorded double-digit strikeouts three times.
On Wednesday, May 15, USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award. The list of semifinalists will then be sent to a voting body consisting of baseball media members, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and 40 of the previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 200 voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. On May 29, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2019. Beginning with the semifinalist announcement and continuing through the finalist round voting deadline, fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
The winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be named on Friday, June 14.
