Huskies Make Three-Run First Inning Stick In Win Over Cal Baptist
April 08, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLEΒ βΒ Washington scored all three of its runs in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over Cal Baptist on Monday night at Husky Ballpark.
Β
The win for the Huskies (15-12) snapped a season-long, seven-game losing streak and gives the Dawgs some momentum as they pack their bags and head to Stanford for a big three-game series.
Β
Cal Baptist fell to 20-12 on the season.
Β
The UW bats came out energized from the start as they accounted for all their offensive output in the early going. Braiden Ward and Ben Baird started the hit parade with singles, and after a walk to Nick Kahle, freshman Colton Cassinelli picked a nice time to record his first collegiate hit in his first career start. The lefty served a ground ball perfectly between the shortstop and third baseman to send two runs home. After a Connor Blair single to load the bases, Joe Wainhouse drove home Kahle with a sacrifice fly.
Β
It was all the offense the Huskies would get as four UW pitchers shut down Cal Baptist.
Β
Jack Enger was impressive in his first career start, and if not for taking a line drive off his foot in the fourth inning, he might have been able to go longer in the game. The sophomore righty allowed two hits and struck out three before exiting.
Β
Leo Nierenberg went the next 1 1/3 innings to earn his first win of the season.
Β
The Lancers scored a pair of runs off of Chris Micheles in the seventh to close the gap, but Stevie Emanuels went the final 1 1/3 innings to hammer the door shut and pick up his first save of 2019.
Β
Cassinelli was 2 for 3 with the two RBI in his first start, while Ward was 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and a stolen base.
Β
The Huskies outhit Cal Baptist, 7-4.
