Fifth-Ranked Stanford Tops UW, 8-2
April 12, 2019 | Baseball
Stanford, Calif. Β βΒ Washington scored first, but ultimately fell to fifth-ranked Stanford, 8-2, in the opener of the three-game series between the two teams Friday night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Β
Β
Washington (15-13, 5-8) enjoyed a 1-0 lead on junior Connor Blair's second inning home run off Brendan Beck (2-2). It was Blair's team-high seventh long ball of the season, but the Huskies' 1-0 lead was short-lived.
The Cardinal (22-5, 8-2 Pac-12) responded with the next seven runs over three innings to pull ahead for good. StanfordΒ tied the game in the second on a pair of doubles before taking the lead in the third on a two-run home run from Brandon Wulff.Β It was one of two home runs allowed by UW freshman starter David Rhodes (4-4). He was also tagged for a long ball by Andrew Daschbach to lead-off the fourth, which was the first run of a four-run frame where the Cardinal sent eight hitters to the plate.
Β
Rhodes calmed down after the fourth inning, gutting out five more outs to save the UW bullpen. He finally came out after he allowed a two-out double to Nick Bellafronto, who eventually came around to score the final run for Stanford on a single.
Β
Colton Cassinelli, Rollie Nichols and Kaiser Weiss strung consecutive singles together in the ninth to produce the Huskies second run, but Cody Jensen recorded the final two outs to close out the game.
Β
Weiss led UW's offense, going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Β
Jack EngerΒ and Dylan Lamb combined to shutdown the Cardinal offense over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Β
Game two of the series will start at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
