UW Pitchers Tough In 3-2 Loss To No. 5 Stanford
April 13, 2019 | Baseball
Stanford, Calif. – The Huskies got a strong effort from three pitchers Saturday night at Sunken Diamond, but No. 5 Stanford also got a strong effort from its trio of hurlers and beat the Huskies, 3-2, to win the first two games of the three-game series.
Stanford (23-5, 9-2 Pac-12) struck for two runs in the first inning to draw first blood, but Washington (15-14, 5-9) responded right back with two runs of its own in the second. Connor Blair and Jonathan Schiffer hit back-to-back doubles to plate the Huskies first run and Ben Baird punctuated the inning with a run-scoring single to make it 2-2.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, their second inning outburst would be the last big threat for the Huskies. Nick Kahle would collect singles in the third and sixth innings, but those would be the only hits for the Huskies after the second inning.
The Cardinal retook the lead in the third inning on a Brandon Wulff sacrifice fly, which turned out to be the winning run.
Husky starter Jordan Jones faced some early adversity, but the junior would settle down after allowing the run in the third inning. Jones would end up pitching into the sixth inning and struck out seven of the last eight Cardinal hitters he faced. After allowing his fifth hit of the game – all singles – Jones (2-4) would exit the game after 5 1/3 innings.
The bullpen would keep the game close for the Huskies with Chris Micheles not allowing a hit in two innings and Stevie Emanuels recording the final two outs.
Stanford starter Will Mattiessen allowed both of the Huskies' runs, but he nine of the 12 outs he recorded were by strikeouts.
Jacob Palisch went the next three innings for the Cardinal and allowed one hit and struck out two.
Jack Little threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit. He would strike out the side in the ninth inning to pick up his seventh save of the year.
The teams wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch at 2:00 p.m. All the action will be carried on the Pac-12 Network.
