Washington To Begin Silverado Showdown

NAPA, Calif. – The 25th ranked Washington Husky women's golf team is next in action at the Silverado Showdown, April 7-9 at the Silverado Resort and Spa. The Huskies are coming off a tie for third at the PING ASU Invitational last weekend in Tempe, Ariz. The Silverado Showdown hosts a strong field with six of the 18 teams ranked inside the top-25.
THE FIELD: California, Colorado, Colorado State, Iowa State, New Mexico, #16 Northwestern, #24 Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, #4 Stanford, #9 UCLA, UNLV, #1 USC, #25 Washington, Washington State, Wisconsin
THE LINEUP: Competing for the Huskies will be junior Alice Duan, senior Julianne Alvarez, sophomore Rino Sasaki, junior Karen Miyamoto, and senior Sarah Rhee.
ALVAREZ'S SENIOR CAMPAIGN: Washington senior Julianne Alvarez has had a strong start to her senior year, posting five top 20 finishes in eight events. She has been UW's top scorer in two events including the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge where she tied for 16th with a 7-over 220. Alvarez also tied for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate, tied for third at the Edean Ihlanfeldt and tied for 17th at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
KEH EARNS PRESTIGIOUS INVITATION: Senior Wenyung Keh was one of 72 players from around the world selected to compete at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship in April.
BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS: Washington women's golf started its fall campaign with a bang taking home team titles in both of its first two events. First, the Dawgs won a share of the team title at the Nittany Lion Invitational after carding an even-par 864 (294-287-283). They followed that up with a 24-stroke victory at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, the Dawgs lone home tournament of the year hosted at Sahalee.
RHEE-DICULOUS: Senior Sarah Rhee has picked up right where she left off from a year ago as she has finished inside the top-20 in five of her seven events on the year. After tying for seventh in the season-opening tournament at Penn State, she went on to earn her first collegiate individual championship taking home the crown at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
TOP 10 EFFORTS: Six of Washington's eight student-athletes have posted at least one top 10 effort so far this season led by Rhee who has only finished outside of the top 10 three times. Joining her with top 10 efforts are senior Julianne Alvarez (T3rd, Edean Ihlanfeldt; T5th, Stanford Intercollegiate ), sophomore Rino Sasaki (T3rd, Edean Ihlanfeldt), Alice Duan (4th, Nittany Lion), freshman Martha Lewis (T9th, Edean Ihlanfeldt) and senior Wenyung Keh (T8th, Stanford Intercollegiate; T9th, Edean Ihlanfeldt).
SPRING SCHEDULE: Washington opened the season at the Northrup Grumman Regional then headed to New Orleans for the All State Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate (Feb. 17-19). After that was a trip to California for the Bruin Wave Invitational (Feb. 25-26) before heading to Arizona for the Mountain View Invitational (March 22-24). The Huskies close the season with the Ping/ASU Invitational (March 29-31) and the Silverado Showdown (April 7-9).
LAST SEASON RESULTS: Featuring a lineup of three juniors and two underclassmen, Washington went on to tie for ninth at the NCAA Championships, just missing the match play segment of the tournament. The Huskies finished fifth at the NCAA Tallahassee Regionals en route to earning a spot at the National event and were led by Sarah Rhee who tied for eighth. Overall UW posted eight top five finishes a year ago along with earning two team titles. Wenyung Keh led the team with a 73.00 stroke average and along with Rhee, posted five top 10 efforts on the year. Keh also set the UW single-round record when she shot a 9-under 63 in the first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regionals.
SENIOR EXPERIENCE: The Husky team still features three members of the 2016 NCAA National Championship squad in juniors Sarah Rhee, Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh. The trio were freshman when Washington made history and all three contributed to UW's victory in match play. Since their freshman season, the trio have combined for 32 top 10 finishes, nine during their freshman campaign, six as sophomores and 12 last season.
NEW FACES: Washington's team will feature two new faces in junior transfer Alice Duan and freshman Martha Lewis. Duan comes to UW from Cal State Northridge and has been a standout on the amateur circuit. She advanced to the Round of 32 at the U.W. Women's Amateur National Championship this summer and claimed the title of the 2018 West Coast Women's Amateur and earned a victory at the Sacramento City Championship. Lewis hails from Surrey, England, the same city as former Husky and national champion Charlotte Thomas. She's represented England on the international circuit since 2013, posting numerous top 10 showings.
