Homer Happy BYU Evens Series With UW
April 19, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Freshman Colton Cassinelli had three hits and Connor Blair drove in two runs, but BYU beat Washington, 7-3, at Husky Ballpark Friday night to even the series at a game apiece.
Β
The Huskies dropped to 17-16 on the season, while BYU improved to 25-10 on the season.
Β
BYU's offense came ready to play a night after getting shutout by three Husky pitchers. The Cougars would score two runs in the first and another run in the second off Husky starter Josh Burgmann.
Β
The Huskies' bats also came ready to play against BYU starter Easton Walker, who entered the night with a 0.82 ERA. The hot-hitting Blair would extend his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the first and for good measure, he would add another RBI in the third.
Β
In the UW half of the first, speedy Braiden Ward trucked all the way home from first base on a looping single by Blair. With Ward running on the pitch, Blair flared a single into right-center field and Ward never slowed down and slid just under the tag from catcher Noah Hill.
Β
Blair cut BYU's advantage to 3-2 in the third on a single that scored Mason Cerrillo, but the Cougars would hit solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to go ahead by three runs and add two more runs in the seventh to make the score 7-2.
Β
Burgmann retook the Pac-12 strikeout lead with nine and now has 73 for the season, but he was charged with five runs and saddled with his third-consecutive loss.
Β
Walker (5-0) went 6 1/3 innings to keep his perfect record for the season intact.
Β
Albert Hsiao picked up a RBI on a groundout in the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late as Mitch McIntyre would limit the Huskies to just the one run.
Β
Cassinelli was 3-for-3 with a double, walk and run, while Blair and Ward each had two hits.
Β
The Cougars and Huskies will battle on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to decide the series winner at Husky Ballpark.
