SEATTLE – The championships are at hand for thirteen Dawgs who have made their way to Birmingham, Alabama for this weekend's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Washington has seven entries in the field and will look to cap a successful indoor season with some hardware this Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time on March 8 and starting at 2 p.m. Pacific time on March 9.
Friday's schedule starts at 3:35 p.m. Pacific time with the women's mile semifinals featuring Katie Rainsberger. Mick Stanovsek follows in the men's mile semifinals at 3:50 p.m. Next on Friday will be senior Izzi Batt-Doyle in the women's 5,000-meter final with the top 16 women in the country this indoor season vying for the title.
Friday closes out with the distance medley relays, where UW is one of five schools to have qualified both their men's and women's teams. The women's DMR final at 6:47 p.m. will feature a Husky lineup of Allie Schadler, Imani Apostol, Hannah Derby, and Lilli Burdon. In the men's DMR at 7:02 p.m. the Dawgs will go with Connor Morello, Cass Elliott, Devan Kirk, and Talon Hull.
On Saturday, action resumes at 2:10 p.m. with the women's mile final followed by the men's mile final 10 minutes later. Then at 4:10 p.m. Rainsberger will be back on the track for the 3,000-meters final. Fred Huxham will be the final Dawg to run as he takes on the men's 3,000-meters at 4:25 p.m.
Rainsberger has followed up her All-American cross country season with a stellar indoor campaign. She opened with a 4:37.30 mile and has since lowered that time twice, setting a new PR at the Last Chance College Elite Meet with a time of 4:35.15. She ran her 3,000-meters qualifier at the Husky Classic in 9:02.84, and also led off the DMR when it posted its qualifying time back in January at the UW Invitational. She now ranks fourth in school history in the mile, third in the 3k, and third on the DMR. This is Rainsberger's second NCAA Indoor appearance; she was third in the 3k and third on the DMR for Oregon in 2017.
Stanovsek, like Rainsberger, previously made NCAA Indoors with Oregon in 2017 (4th on the DMR) and in 2018 (3rd on the DMR and 16th in the mile). He had a big weekend on Feb. 15 and 16 when on the first night of the UW Last Chance College Elite Meet he anchored the DMR to its qualifying time of 9:28.14, and the next day he came back to run his mile qualifier of 3:58.64. That mile time ranks Stanovsek fourth in school history.
Batt-Doyle has had a very satisfying start to her fifth year in school but first ever indoor season. In four years as a Dawg she had never raced in the Dempsey until she opened with a 3,000-meters time of 9:09.30 at the UW Invitational. Two weeks later she moved up to the 5k and broke the UW indoor record by 14 seconds, running 15:40.53. She tuned up for NCAAs by running the mile leg on the Husky DMR at MPSF Championships and then doubled back to run the 3k in 9:09.18. Batt-Doyle was an NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier in the 10,000-meters in 2017 where she was 12th.
This is the first ever NCAA Championship on the track for the fifth-year senior Huxham, though he ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championships four times, with a career-best 58th-place finish this fall. Huxham came out of the gate this indoor season with a big 3k PR, running 7:51.82 to go to No. 3 in school history. He then ran the No. 2 mark in school history in the 5k, going 13:42.67 at the Husky Classic. His only race since then was a tune-up at the MPSF Championships where he anchored the DMR.
The women's distance medley relay has three NCAA Indoor first-timers in Allie Schadler, Imani Apostol, and Hannah Derby, but will be anchored by Lilli Burdon who will be running the DMR at nationals for the fourth year in a row and who anchored Oregon to the victory last season. Schadler, leading off, nearly qualified for the meet in the mile with a PR of 4:37.12 at the Husky Classic which ranks her fifth in school history. Apostol ran the fastest 400-meters of her career at the MPSF Championships, going 54.97 to move to No. 3 in school history indoors. Apostol does have some NCAA Track experience as she was part of the women's 4x400m relay that made the NCAA Outdoor semifinals in 2017. Derby lowered her indoor 800-meter PR to 2:06.98 at the MPSF meet, fourth-fastest in school history. Burdon anchored the DMR to its NCAA qualifying mark of 11:00.35 back in January, and then ran a strong 3,000-meters time of 9:03.32 at the MPSF Championships that left her one spot out of qualifying for NCAAs in that event. Serving as an alternate for the women's DMR is senior Anna Maxwell, who ran a season-best mile time of 4:43.86 this season.
The men's DMR will have four Huskies all making their first NCAA Championship appearances on the track. Senior Connor Morello was an NCAA quarterfinalist last year in the 800-meters outdoors. He lowered his indoor PR to 1:49.08 this year and he led off the DMR when it posted its 9:28.14 time to qualify for the meet. Freshman Cass Elliott ran the 400m leg when the Dawgs qualified, though he has yet to run an open 400-meters this season, focusing mainly on the 800-meters where he posted a season-best of 1:50.55. Sophomore Devan Kirk, on the 800m leg, has a season-best time of 1:50.24 this season. Anchoring will be redshirt freshman Talon Hull, who broke four minutes in his first collegiate mile this indoor season, running 3:59.56 at the UW Invitational.
