BIRMINGHAM, Ala. โ The NCAA Indoor Championships are halfway to completion at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama and day one for the Huskies was highlighted by the women's distance medley relay racing to a spot on the podium in seventh-place tonight after coming in with the 12th and final seed time.
ย
Sophomore Allie Schadler, and seniors Imani Apostol, Hannah Derby, and Lilli Burdon all secured First Team All-America honors as well as a couple team points for the Dawgs as they took seventh in the relay final in a time of 11:10.94. It's the fifth time in school history that the Huskies have finished in the top-eight in the event, and the first since 2016. Burdon, the Oregon transfer who had the final anchor 1,600m leg, is now a 10-time All-American, four of those coming in the DMR, while Apostol gets her second honor and first First Team honor, while Derby and Schadler are All-Americans for the first time.
ย
The first Husky up on the track today was sophomore Katie Rainsberger in her first NCAA Indoor appearance since 2017. In the second of the two heats, Rainsberger sensed a very slow early pace and moved up to the front to push the pace for the lion's share of the racing. On the final lap she slipped a few spots but hung on to take sixth and that was good for the final time qualifier to the final as she ran 4:39.81. Rainsberger will race in the final tomorrow at 2:10 pm Pacific time.
ย
Mick Stanovsek raced in the second of two semis in the men's mile. The junior went wide and up to the front to push the pace with three laps to go. On the final lap, however, he slipped back a bit and was just edged out for the sixth spot that would have got him into the final. Stanovsek crossed in a time of 4:07.87 which was the seventh-fastest time overall as the top four times from heat one to auto-advance were all slower, but just missed the final time qualifier by 0.18 seconds. He earns Second Team All-America honors for the effort.
ย
Izzi Batt-Doyle set the Husky indoor school record in the 5,000-meters earlier this season and she was the first Dawg to run the women's 5k at NCAA Indoors since 2012. She came in seeded 15th but finished 12th today in a time of 16:06.38, capping off the first indoor season of her college career with Second Team All-America honors.
ย
The final event for the Dawgs tonight was the men's DMR. Stanovsek came back from the mile semis to lead off the Dawgs at 1,200-meters, passing to freshman Cass Elliott on the 400m leg, then senior Connor Morello on the 800m leg and redshirt freshman Talon Hull ran the final 1,600-meter leg. The Huskies finished 10th tonight in 9:44.89 to pick up Second Team All-America honors.
ย
On Saturday, the Huskies will close out nationals with Rainsberger racing the mile final at 2:10 p.m. Pacific and then returning to the track just under two hours later to race the 3,000-meters. Last but not least, senior Fred Huxham will run the men's 3k final at 4:25 p.m.
