BIRMINGHAM, Ala. โ The indoor track and field season finished up today at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama and Washington sophomore Katie Rainsberger and senior Fred Huxham both turned in top-10 finishes in their events to lead the Husky efforts. Rainsberger was seventh in the women's mile final and Huxham took 10th in the men's 3k with Rainsberger also doubling back to take 12th in the women's 3k.
ย
Rainsberger's first of two outings came in the mile final, where she tucked into the rail in the middle of the pack and held that position nearly the full way, going with the leader when the pace picked up with two to go. Just a sophomore indoors, the Colorado native dug down to pull out a seventh-place finish in 4:39.05 and earn two more team points for the Huskies. It was the best finish by a Husky in the women's mile final since 2010 when Katie Follett was the runner-up.
ย
She returned to the track less than two hours later to battle against a field that was mostly much more rested, as the majority of her competition had either not raced yet this weekend, or had run the 5k or DMR on Friday. Nevertheless, Rainsberger stayed connected with the pack throughout until it broke up with about 800 meters to go. She would ultimately finish in 12th-place in a time of 9:17.37, for a Second Team All-America to go with her First Team in the mile.
ย
Fifth-year senior Fred Huxham then closed things out in the men's 3,000-meters, his first NCAA Championships appearance on the track. Huxham ran towards the back of the pack early but worked his way up and as the pace ramped up and things strung out he was sitting as high as seventh, but a couple runners out-kicked him late and he crossed in 10th in 7:58.95, just two seconds out of the last podium spot. Huxham will earn Second Team All-America honors for the run, the first of his career.
ย
All told the Huskies came away with five First Team All-America honors for Rainsberger, and the women's DMR of Allie Schadler, Imani Apostol, Hannah Derby, and Lilli Burdon, and eight Second Team All-America honors.
