Huskies Drop Game One Of Series, 1-0, To No. 7 Oregon State
March 29, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β βΒ Four Husky pitchers combined to strikeout 14 batters Friday night at Husky Ballpark, but seventh-ranked Oregon State made a first inning run standup in a 1-0 shutout in front of 1,483 fans.
Β
UW freshman starter David Rhodes began and ended the first inning with strikeouts, but in between he gave up back-to-back, two-out doubles to Adley Rutschman and Tyler Malone to fall behind 1-0. It was the only run that Rhodes would allow in six-plus innings, but unfortunately it was the only run for either side on the night.
Β
Rhodes (4-2) left trailing 1-0 after walking Ryan Ober to start the seventh, but it was still another remarkable performance for the first-year player. The Canadian right-hander struck out a career-high eight batters and recorded his fourth-straight quality start. He threw a career high 108 pitches, walked four and allowed five hits.
Β
His counterpart on the mound, Brandon Eisert (6-0), came into the game with a 0.38 earned run average over 23 2/3 innings and he lived up to his billing, throwing a career-high 6 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out nine, walking two and scattering four hits. He left in the seventh after allowing a double to Ben Baird, but Christian Chamberlain would get out of the jam unscathed.
Β
UW had several scoring chances, getting runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Huskies were unable to come up with a clutch two-out hit. The Huskies were held to four hits, while the Beavers only managed five themselves.
Β
Leo Nierenberg struck out one in 2/3 innings, Chris Micheles struck out three in 1 1/3 innings and Stevie Emanuels whiffed a pair of Beavers in the ninth inning.
Β
Mitchell Verburg retired the final two Husky batters to pick up his first save of the season.
Β
The Huskies will try to even the series on Saturday. First pitch at Husky Ballpark is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
