UW Wins Fifth-Straight, Clinch Series With 11-7 Win Over Cal Poly
March 02, 2019 | Baseball
The Huskies have now scored nine of more runs in five of their six victories.
The top of the order was especially potent for the Diamond Dawgs on Saturday. The first four hitters combined to go 9 for 15 at the plate, accounted for nine of the runs and drove in seven.
Leadoff hitter Braiden Ward was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. No. 2 hitter Nick Kahle was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and a RBI. No. 3 hitter Ramon Bramasco went 3 for 5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Cleanup hitter Joe Wainhouse was 1 for 3 with his one hit being a big one, a two-run home run in the eighth inning that provided insurance.
While the Husky pitchers did allow seven runs, only three of them were earned. Jordan Jones (1-1) went five innings, allowing six runs – only two earned – and gave up eight hits to pick up the win. He had six strikeouts and now has 151 in his career.
The teams exchanged runs in the first inning – coming in very different manners. Cal Poly strung together three singles off Jones to take a 1-0 lead and Washington answered by jumping on the back of its speedy centerfielder Ward.
The sophomore led off the home half of the first with a single and promptly stole second and third on consecutive pitches to up his Pac-12 leading total to seven stolen bases on the season. He would add an eighth steal later in the game. Kahle would send Ward home with a sacrifice fly to right field for his team-leading 14th RBI in eight games.
UW took a 4-1 lead after a three-run third inning, but the Mustangs answered with a five-spot in the fourth, scoring four unearned runs to take a 6-4 advantage. Bramasco and Mason Cerrillo had RBI singles and Jonathan Schiffer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the Mustangs fourth, centerfielder Bradlee Beesly provided the big blow with a two-out, bases-loaded, bases-clearing double after the inning was kept alive on an error. Beesly came around to when Tate Samuelson reached on a throwing error, making the score 6-4.
The Huskies continued to put up crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings to re-take the lead, 8-6. Bramasco drove in a pair of runs in the fourth with a Texas-League double and the Huskies picked up another pair of runs in the fifth on RBI groundouts by Noah Hsue and pinch-hitter Rollie Nichols.
UW scored three times in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Bramasco hit a double into the left-field corner with two outs and Nick Kahle running from first. He beat the relay home to give the Huskies a 9-6 lead. Wainhouse followed with a blast off Cal Poly pitcher Taylor Dollard for his fourth home run of the year.
The Mustangs would score a run in the ninth and bring the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded, but UW sophomore Dylan Lamb came into the game and picked up his first collegiate save by getting Cole Cabrera to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
The Huskies and Mustangs wrap up the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
