"On the road, at this place which has historically been a tough place for us to win and score runs, we feel good about it," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said.
Β
The Huskies (11-4, 2-0 Pac-12) equaled both their most runs ever scored and largest margin of victory against the Ducks (10-7, 0-2). They beat Oregon 19-4, in 1949 and had a 16-run win, 18-2, back in 1954.
Β
UW put up crooked numbers in four innings to back another strong pitching performance by their starter, this time junior Jordan Jones. Jones (2-2) went seven innings, allowing three runs β all in the third inning β on six hits. He struck out three and walked one. Jones seemingly got better as he got further into the game as he retired the final 10 batters he faced.
Β
"Jordan settled in the last three innings," Meggs said. "He struggled the first four innings. He just wasn't himself. He couldn't find his changeup and was struggling to find his fastball, but he did what we needed him to do."
"When we went up five the second time, he got a shutdown inning and kind of sucked the life out of their dugout."
Β
Washington scored five runs in the third, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and exploded for four more in the eighth and six in the ninth. So far in the two-game series, the Huskies are outscoring the Ducks, 28-6, and have outhit them, 31-11.
Β
Nick Kahle once again led the Huskies' hit parade, going 3 for 3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Mason Cerrillo also had three hits (3 for 5) and drove in a career-high four runs. Connor Blair was 2 for 4 with three RBI, including a home run for a second-consecutive game.
Β
For the second-consecutive game the Huskies scored five times early to give themselves some breathing room on the scoreboard. This time, it was the third inning, when the Huskies sent nine men to the plate and made the most out of three hits and two Duck errors.
Β
The Huskies opened the scoring when with Noah Hsue at third and Braiden Ward at first, pitcher Robert Ahlstrom threw a pick-off attempt into foul territory down the right-field line. Hsue scored and Ward moved all the way to third on the play.
Β
After Ramon Bramasco walked, Kahle delivered an RBI single into left for his fifth hit in six at bats in the series.
Β
Blair capped the scoring in the inning by hammering an 0-1 pitch from Ahlstrom (3-2) over the left-field fence for a three-run shot. It was Blair's second home run in as many days and moved him into a tie for the team lead with four on the season.
Β
The Ducks answered back with three runs in their half of the fourth inning to close the gap to two runs. They scored the first run on a Jonny DeLuca RBI single and another run scored on the play when Hsue collapsed with the ball during a rundown, allowing Tanner Smith to score. Hsue had to leave the game with a knee injury.
Β
Oregon capped the inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Spencer Steer that made the score 5-3. That would be the final peep from the Ducks' bats as the Huskies rattled off the next 14 runs.
Β
The Huskies went back up by five runs in the fifth, putting a three-spot on the scoreboard. Cerrillo had the big hit in the inning, a bases-loaded single off pitcher Keaton Chase's foot to score Kahle and Joe Wainhouse. Nick Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to score Blair for the third run of the inning.
Β
With the Huskies in control, they added 10 more runs in the eighth and ninth innings.Β Ben BairdΒ highlighted the barrage, picking up three RBIs during the stretch on a double and a triple.
Β
The Huskies go for the sweep on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
