Washington Beats Liberty In 4-3 Thriller

SEATTLE --- The Washington men's tennis team defeated Liberty 4-3 in a hard fought battle on Friday night at Nordstrom Tennis Center. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 2-2 on the season.
Liberty began the match by winning the doubles point and taking a 1-0 lead. The freshman tandem of Kasper Smith and Adam Torocsik fell to Ian Sturgill and William Barker 3-6. Senior Kawika Lam and senior Enzo Sommer defeated Josh Wilson and Steve Mundst 6-4 as the doubles point came down to Court 1.
Sophomore Jack Davis and senior Piers Foley lost to Nicaise Muamba and Chase Burton 4-6 as the Flames earned the doubles point.
As the singles matchups began, the Huskies would need to win four out of six matches in order to win the overall match.
Senior Sebastian Hawken breezed through his match 6-2, 6-1 to tie up the overall match at 1. Hawken improved his dual singles record to 2-1 on the season.
Next, freshman Ewen Lumsden defeated Chase Burton 6-2, 6-2 to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Davis was the next Husky to earn a point as he defeated Eddie Gutierrez 7-6 (6), 6-1. Davis was able to win the first set tiebreak and breezed through the second en route to his victory.
Sommer fell to Muamba in hard fought match 3-6, 6-7 (5). The back and forth match ended with the Flames earning a point as the Huskies kept a 3-2 lead.
The matchup on Court 2 was a battle throughout as both sets went to a tiebreaker. Josh Wilson defeated Foley 7-6 (9), 7-6 (3) to tie up the match at three points a side.
The match would come down to Court 4 as freshman Ernesto Turegano and Sturgill went to the third set to claim a winner. Turegano showed pose coming back from a one set deficit to come out on top, beating Sturgill 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
The Huskies will next face Santa Clara on Sunday Feb. 3 at 1:30 pm at Nordstrom Tennis Center.
