Huskies Win Boeing Apple Cup Series
November 08, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – For the first time in 15 years, the Washington Huskies took home the Boeing Apple Cup Series win, defeating the #24 Washington State Cougars 1-0. Washington held Washington State scoreless throughout, winning the game on a Summer Yates penalty kick goal. The Huskies end the regular season 11-6-2 overall and 7-4-0 in the Pac-12, taking third in the conference.
Siena Ruelas earned the clean sheet for the Dawgs, making five saves and standing tall all day in net.
An early attack by Washington State saw the Husky defense stand tall, weathering four corner kicks in the first ten minutes without allowing a single shot. Washington's defense held tough and committed only two fouls in the scoreless half.
The Huskies nearly had a breakaway on the counter, only for Isabella Castro to be fouled to prevent the attack, drawing a yellow on Washington State. Ameera Hussen took the free kick low into traffic, only for it to trickle through out of reach of Husky feet.
After a number of fouls against the Cougars, Washington drew the foul in the most dangerous spot. Makena Carr was tripped down as she cut into the middle of the box to earn the PK, which Yates converted for the game's only goal. The Huskies locked down on defense the rest of the way to secure the win, putting an end to a furious Washington State attempt to tie without allowing another shot.
