Huskies Sweep Five Races At 40th Head Of The Lake
November 03, 2019 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE – The Washington men's rowing team won each race in which it raced Sunday at the Head of the Lake Regatta, wrapping up the team's fall competition schedule. The Huskies won the collegiate/open men's eight, JV eight, third eight, four and single sculls competitions.
The 40th annual Head of the Lake, co-hosted by the UW and Lake Washington Rowing Club, featured a total of 467 entries from 83 colleges, schools and clubs, competing in 42 race categories for juniors, masters and college athletes. The race started on Lake Union, traveled under the Ship Canal Bridge through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and finished on Lake Washington, near the UW's Conibear Shellhouse.
"It was definitely RowTown USA at its best," said UW men's head coach Michael Callahan. "Flat water, seaplanes, kayaks, everyone racing and having a good time with the sun out."
Washington opened the regatta with a victory in the first race of the day, as the Huskies' top men's crew won the Ben Porter Cup – the men's collegiate/open 8+ competition. The Huskies, coxed by Adam Gold and stroked by Samuel Halbert, rowed the three-mile course from Lake Union to Conibear Shellhouse in a time of 15:10.788, about 42 seconds ahead of an Oregon State crew.
"The varsity had a really good, aggressive start," Callahan said. "That's something we wanted to build on from the Head of the Charles, and I think we did that. They got in a good rhythm to their base and finished off strong."
The Huskies' 2V8+ won its race as well, as coxswain Zach Casler and stroke rower Carsten Rossen guided the UW to a time of 15:26.527, half a minute ahead of a crew from the University of British Columbia.
Washington entered three men's eights in the collegiate 3V8+ competition, with two of those three comprised almost entirely of newcomers, and took the top three spots in that five-boat race. The crew of upperclassmen, coxed by Isabel Klein and stroked by Cole Zwierzynski, won the race in 15:44.782, with the younger crews coming second and third.
Most of the same UW rowers who competed in the eights returned to the start line a little while later in the fours and single sculls events.
Washington had six crews compete in the championship men's 4+, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells, and another eight individuals in the men's open single sculls William Tytus Cup.
In the men's four, the Huskies took the top three spots, followed by a crew from Oregon State. The other UW crews took fifth, eighth and 10th. The winning boat, which included three oarsmen who had won the collegiate/open eights race earlier in the day, won with a time of 16:52.411, about 14 seconds ahead of another Husky four.
Washington wrapped up the day in the men's open single sculls William Tytus Cup, where Huskies finished first through fourth. The winning sculler was freshman Cormac Kennedy-Leverett, an Australian who won the silver medal in the single sculls at the 2018 Junior World Championships. He finished in a time of 18:57.000, ahead of UW senior George Esau, who came in second. Huskies Nick Everett and Chase Deitner finished in third and fourth place.
"We wanted to see who was the best single sculler in the boathouse," Callahan explained. "Cormac was seventh in the world at the Under 23s and hopes to become a national team sculler going forward. That result bodes well."
