Bodily Nets Winner as No. 7 Washington Downs Cal 1-0
October 06, 2019 | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. --- Blake Bodily netted the lone goal of the match in the 30th minute and the Washington defense made it stand up as the No. 7-ranked Huskies held on for a 1-0 victory over California on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
Washington improves to 10-1-0 with its sixth-straight win, improving to 4-0-0 in Pac-12. The Golden Bears drop to 5-3-1 on the season and to 1-2-0 in the conference. The game continued an impressive stretch with 17 of the last 18 meetings between the two being decided by one or fewer goals dating back to 2010.
Bodily broke the ice in the contest with a nice finish after a scramble in the box in the 30th minute. A great cross by James Smith from the far side found three Huskies in the box as Joey Parish got a head on it but sent it right at the keeper. The rebound went to Christian Soto, who also saw his shot blocked by the keeper. But Bodily came in on the near post and was able to bang the rebound into the empty net to give the Huskies the lead.
The defense made the goal stand up despite intense pressure from Cal which held the ball much of the final 15 minutes. Freshman netminder Sam Fowler made some great plays including a diving stop in the 88th minute to earn his fifth-straight shutout to start the season.
Washington got a couple of chances early on, with Ethan Barlow sending a long free kick into the box where it was just inches over the head of Ryan Sailor. As Cal put it back into play, the Huskies forced a turnover and Lucas Meek took a crack from the top of the box, but it was blocked.
Cal would put together a nice run of play over the next 10 minutes, creating four shots, but unable to find the back of the net. After some midfield play, the Huskies were able to break the ice in the 30th minute with Bodily's goal.
The Golden Bears would hold an 8-5 edge in shots throughout the first half and got a great chance in the 34th minute but a shot from the top of the box took a slight deflection enough to send it just wide of the goal.
The Huskies had a solid chance to extend the lead early in the 54th with Meek and Soto teaming up on a counter-attack break. Meek drew the defender out and left it for Soto, who cracked a nice shot toward the far post only to see the Cal goalie make a great diving save to push it wide.
In the 69th minute, Washington looked to have another chance as Soto was fouled about 25 yards away from goal. Charlie Ostrem stepped up to take the kick, bending it around the wall only to see it hit off the far post and be cleared from danger.
