Huskies Keep Up Winning Ways, Down #20 Cal 1-0
October 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, California – The Washington Huskies kept the winning streak going, defeating the #20 California Golden Bears 1-0 for their fourth straight win. Makena Carr scored the game's only goal, assisted by Olivia van der Jagt and Taylor Sekyra. Washington remains undefeated in Pac-12 play at 2-0-0 and is now 6-2-2 overall on the season.
Siena Ruelas earned her first solo shutout of 2019. Ruelas saved the only shot on goal she faced in the first half easily. In the second half, the senior made a great punch and rushed out to smother a through ball, keeping Cal from getting on the board.
The Huskies were an offensive juggernaut for much of the game but just couldn't break through for the goal until the 71st minute. Washington had three corners in the first three minutes of the game. Cal would manage only one shot on goal in the first half as Washington controlled the pace of play.
Three times the Huskies appeared to score the opening goal before finally finding the goal. A corner kick in the last five seconds of the first half was headed in just after the horn sounded. In the 51st minute, Ameera Hussen beat the keeper with a great shot but had it hit the crossbar and bounce straight down and out.
A controversial call in the 59th minute saw the Huskies again score on a corner kick, only for a late foul to be called as it was ruled an attacker interfered with the keeper. Washington would not be deterred and continued to put on the pressure, then controlled the ball well in the corners and midfield to kill the last 15 minutes.
